The Philadelphia Phillies and free-agent outfielder Bobby Abreu have agreed on a minor-league contract that includes an invitation to spring training, the team announced in a press release on Tuesday. Abreu will make $800,000 if he breaks camp with the Phillies, according to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman, who first reported the deal.

The 17-year major-league veteran will earn a $50,000 bonus if he earns Comeback Player of the Year honors. Conversely, he can opt out of the deal if he's not selected to the Phillies' 25-man roster by March 26, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

Abreu, who turns 40 in March, hasn't appeared in the big leagues since 2012, when he hit .242/.350/.342 in 257 plate appearances for the Angelsand Dodgers. However, he tore up the Venezuelan League this winter, hitting .322/.416/.462 in the regular season and .464/.549/.982 with eight home runs in 15 playoff games.

If Abreu makes the team, it will be his second stint with the Phillies. From 1998 through 2006, he hit .303/.416/.513 in 5,885 plate appearances and was selected to a pair of All-Star teams while playing in Philadelphia.

MLB mandates metal detectors at all ballparks in 2015

Major League Baseball plans to have additional security screening measures in place at all 30 ballparks by the start of the 2015 season, according to a Mariners press release announcing the arrival of walk-through metal detectors at the gates of Safeco Field for 2014.

Word first came down in November regarding MLB's plan to push for metal detectors at all venues. Each club will reportedly be able to choose between the walk-through detectors or those of the hand-held variety, according to the AP's Ronald Blum.

Either way, parks will be forced to conform to the new standard, which came about in meetings between MLB and the Department of Homeland Security, per the press release.

Astros, Ryan discussing business relationship

The Houston Astros and Hall-of-Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan have mutual interest in a business relationship, reports Jose de Jesus Ortiz of the Houston Chronicle.

Astros owner Jim Crane discussed the possibility of bringing the legendary hurler aboard:

"Certainly, we could make room for Nolan. We'll see how that works with the business side and the baseball side."

Ryan is open to the idea of working with his son, Reid, who is the Astros' president of business operations. Ryan recently retired from his post as CEO of the Texas Rangers and wouldn't consider working for any other MLB team outside of Houston, per FOX 26's Mark Berman.

Bastardo, Maxwell avoid arbitration

Relief pitcher Antonio Bastardo and outfielder Justin Maxwell avoided arbitration with their clubs on Tuesday, according to team announcements.

Bastardo and the Phillies settled at $2 million, per Matt Gelb of the Philly Inquirer. That figure is $500,000 fewer than what Bastardo wanted, but more than $300,000 above what the team initially offered. The 28-year-old left-hander posted a 2.32 ERA in 42⅔ innings last season but missed 50 games due to his involvement in the Biogenesis scandal.

Maxwell will receive $1.2 million from the Royals, according to the Associated Press (via Yahoo! Sports), after originally seeking $1.7 million. He hit .268/.351/.505 in 111 plate appearances after being acquired by Kansas City from Houston at the trade deadline.
