John W. Birney Sr., of Gloucester City; Pine Grove Fire Co. Volunteer, Ironworker, Army Veteran

GLOUCESTER CITY NJ (CNBNews.net)--John W. Birney Sr., of Gloucester City, NJ, lost his battle with cancer on Wednesday, December 18, 2013. He was 84-years-old.
Mr. Birney was a lifelong resident of Gloucester City. He worked as an Ironworker for Local #401, Philadelphia until his retirement in 1971. John was an Army veteran and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3620, and the American Legion Post #135 both located in Gloucester City. John was a Gloucester City volunteer fireman and a lifetime member of the Pine Grove Fire Department. For a good number of years Mr. Birney coached minor league baseball and was a member of the Gloucester City Little League organization.
He is survived by his wife of 63-years, Ruth (nee Cunningham), four children John Jr. (Sue), Ruth Boulden(Kevin), Robert (Barbara) and Donna (Larry). He is also survived by nine- grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and one-great-great-grandchild. Also survived by his sister Katherine Brown and brothers, Joseph and Patrick Ashton.
Relatives and friends are invited to meet Monday from 9:00 to 11:00 AM at the ETHERINGTON-CRERAN FUNERAL HOME, 700 POWELL ST., GLOUCESTER CITY, NJ. John’s funeral service will be held 11:00 AM at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Woodbury Memorial Park in West Deptford. In lieu of flowers memorial donations to Samaritan Healthcare & Hospice, 5 Eves Drive, Suite 300, Marlton, NJ 08053 would be appreciated.
