Marcelin Scores 2 TD's, Runs for 173 yards in 20-9 win over William Paterson

WAYNE, NJ – Rowan University running back Withler Marcelin scored two touchdowns and ran for a career-high 173 yards in a 20-9 win over William Paterson University on Saturday afternoon.

The Profs are now 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC). The Pioneers have an overall mark of 3-5 and they are 1-4 in NJAC play.

Marcelin (so. Ocean Twp., NJ/Ocean Twp) ran the ball 33 times which is also a career-mark. In his first start, quarterback Bill McCarty (so. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) was 6 of 13 for 58 yards. Running back Khalil Pierce (fr. Neptune, NJ/Timber Creek) had 12 carries for 83 yards and one touchdown. Wide receiver Ed Eisenhart (jr. Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Reg.) caught two passes for 38 yards. 

On the defense, linebacker Tyler Jenkins (jr. Woodbury, NJ/Woodbury) made 12 tackles. Defensive lineman Chris Alvarez (jr. Cliffside Park, NJ/Cliffside Park) tallied nine tackles, two for a loss (-13 yards), two sacks (-13 yards) and two pass defenses. Linebackers Dominic Caruso (sr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) and Darren Dungee (so. Morristown, NJ/Morristown) each collected seven tackles. Defensive back Anthony Verrilli (jr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) and defensive lineman Mike Rinaldi (sr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) each recorded an interception.

For William Paterson, quarterback Ryan Gresik (sr. Newton, NJ/Newton) was 22 of 46 for 210 yards and a touchdown. Running back Matt Deiana (so. Somers, NY/Somers) carried the ball seven times for 27 yards. Wideout Darius Kersey (so. Dover, NJ/Dover) caught four passes for 79 yards and one touchdown, while wide receiver Mike Vannucci (jr. Bethpage, NJ/Plainedge) made seven catches for 64 yards. Linebacker Carlo Caponetta (so. Hazlet, NJ/Raritan) had 15 tackles and defensive lineman Pat Thomas (jr. Lodi, NJ/Lodi) accumulated 11 tackles, one for a loss (-5 yards). 

Marcelin put Rowan on the board at 10:20 of the first quarter, scoring on a 30-yard run that capped a five-play 99-yard drive. Marcelin had four carries for 67 yards on the drive. William Paterson recorded a safety with 8:32 to play as wideout Frankie Goris (so. Fort Lee, NJ/Fort Lee) was tackled in the end zone by safety Jason Montvalvo (fr. Hoboken, NJ/Hoboken). At the 13:00 mark of the second quarter, Pierce ran the ball in from one yard out for a 14-2 Prof lead.

Gresik hit Kersey for a 63-yard touchdown on the third play after halftime to cut the lead to 14-9 with 13:50 remaining. Marcelin added his second touchdown of the game with 6:33 left in the fourth, scoring on a two-yard run. The drive was setup after an interception by Rinaldi. Marcelin ran six times for 18 yards and wideout Todd Guiillaume (so. Irvington, NJ/Immaculate Conception) had a 12-yard catch during the eight-play 30-yard drive. The extra point was missed, making the final score 20-9.

Rowan will return home to face SUNY Cortland on Saturday, November 2 for a 1 p.m. kick-off.
