Ed Selb for Gloucester County Freeholder Board

press release October 29,2013

Ed Selb, who is running as a Republican for the Gloucester County Freeholder Board, released the following statement today explaining his qualifications for the position, along with a list of reasons on why he wants to serve on the Board. A statement from Margie Love, his running mate, will appear Wednesday on CNBNews.

I am Ed Selb and my wife and I grew up in Gloucester County. We have lived, worked and Ed headshot1 raised our family here all our life. I graduated from Delsea Regional High School, graduated from Gloucester County College and started a family. I became a police officer in 1980 working for the Department of Human Services, Township of Franklin PD, and Newfield Boro PD and finally spent over 28 years at Harrison Township PD, retiring as a Detective Sergeant.

I gained a vast knowledge of municipal government working as a police officer in the community. Besides being a DARE officer in the elementary and middle schools, I also was a DARE Mentor, teaching the curriculum all over the NJ to officers in the Mid-Atlantic Region. I was honored in 2011 NJ DARE Officer of the Year, an honor I held in high esteem. Besides the DARE program, I was instrumental in the police department in setting up training, policies and community events, such as organizing a Thanksgiving Dinner for Senior Citizens of Harrison Township, an event that continues today, without any cost to the township.

I was fortunate to be involved in establishing the Gloucester County Juvenile Officer’s Association with Det. Lou Butler for Glassboro PD. Together. We kept officers informed and up-to-date on the juvenile justice and juveniles. I was also the President of the Gloucester County Investigator’s Association for several years and an active participant.

During my limited free time, I became a volunteer firemen and EMT and served in both Harrison Township Fire Companies and Ferrell Fire Company in Elk Township. I became fire commissioner, elected to four consecutive terms and served as chairman and vice chairman for the last 4 years before stepping down due to a health concern. I was instrumental in bringing a full-time paid EMS service to the township, along with part-time paid firefighters during the day. All this while, stabilizing the tax rate, forming policies and reigning in wasteful spending habits. The last year I was involved there was a surplus of over $500,000 and a stable tax rate and budget. Plans were in place to reduce the debt service, purchasing new equipment and all at no additional cost to the taxpayer.

I have served as Harrison Township Emergency Management Coordinator since 2006 and was the Deputy Coordinator since 1986. I have adjusted over the years with the changes from a planning agency to an active participant in numerous snow storms, flood, hurricanes and even a couple Chili Cook-offs.

I also became involved with my church, currently serving as a board member as an elder. Recently, I have stepped up to participating in the morning Sunday service. I was actively involved in the church’s Royal Ranger program, various choirs and plays.

My parents raised me to be involved in my community and doing more than just live there. I have been involved in various capacities my entire adult life form the age of 18. I always give back more than I received from my community and plan to continue to do that as a county freeholder. My experience in the private business sector now, gives me another perspective along with being a Certified Public Manager. As a police officer, I look for problems and then work to resolve them so that I can move on to the next problem. Importantly, I look out for the taxpayer, he victim and the families that my decisions will have on them. I have worked with budgets and know where to balance what is important against what is wasteful.

Voting for myself and Margie Love is looking out for the middle class working families, no hidden agendas, no strings attached, just honest, intelligent decisions for the residents of Gloucester County.
