Rowan over Montclair 7-0, Marcelin ran the ball 18 times for 148 yards

GLASSBORO, NJ – A 64-yard touchdown run on the third play from scrimmage by running back Withler Marcelin (so. Ocean Twp., NJ/Ocean Twp.) was the only scoring in Rowan University's 7-0 win over Montclair State University. Tonight was the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opener for both teams.

The win gave head coach Jay Accorsi 89 for his career, making him the all-time wins leader at Rowan. He passed K.C. Keeler who had accumulated 88 wins in nine seasons. Accorsi is in his 12th season as head coach.

The Profs are now 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the NJAC, while the Red Hawks have a record of 1-3, 0-1 in NJAC play. Marcelin ran the ball 18 times for 148 yards and the touchdown. Quarterback Paul Hamersma (so. Tenafly, NJ/Tenafly) was 8 for 28 for 100 yards. Wide Receiver Ed Eisenhart (jr. Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Reg.) caught two passes for 28 yards. Linebacker Darren Dungee (so. Morristown, NJ/Morristown) led the defense, making 10 tackles, one for loss. Linebacker Dominic Caruso (sr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) made nine stops, recorded one sack and a pass defense.

Running back A.J. Scoppa (sr. New Milford, NJ/New Milford) carried the ball 22 times for 87 yards and caught four passes for 31 yards for Montclair State. Quarterback Ryan Davies (so. Lanoka Harbor, NJ/Howell) was 13 for 30 and passed for 138 yards, while wide receiver Clinton Coffey (so. Roselle, NJ/Roselle) made three catches for 44 yards. Linebacker Adnan Sakiri (sr. Ramsey, NJ/Ramsey) made 11 tackles to lead the Red Hawk defense.

Rowan was able to ice the game in the fourth quarter as they got the ball at their own 13-yard line with 6:34 on the clock. They ran 12 plays on the final drive and were able to kneel down three times in the final two minutes to win the game.

Rowan will hit the road on Saturday, October 4 as they travel to face Brockport for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
