press release September 27, 2013

World Class BBQ from the Country’s Best Pitmasters Along with

the East Coast’s Largest Rodeo Mosey Into Atlantic City for a BBQ & Broncos Weekend

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ (September 30, 2013) – Over 80 famous pitmasters and cook teams from across the U.S. will gather in Atlantic City for the DO AC Smokin’ Hot BBQ Competition  to grill and smoke their tastiest meats for the chance to win $50,000 in prize money – the largest cash prize for a BBQ competition on the East Coast. The Grand Champion takes home the top prize of $10,000.

The competition takes place Saturday, October 5 & Sunday, October 6, from 12 noon to 7pm each day in a parking lot at Pacific and Delaware Avenues near Showboat Casino Hotel. Admission is $5 for adults and free for kids under 12. Admission is also free with an Atlantic City Boardwalk Rodeo ticket.  MillerCoors is the official beer sponsor of the DO AC Smokin’ Hot BBQ Competition.

Adding to the excitement, the Atlantic City Boardwalk Rodeo is back for the third year at Boardwalk Hall for two rip-roarin’ days of rodeo matchups on Saturday, October 5 at 7:30pm and Sunday, October 6 at 1pm. The best cowboys and cowgirls will be in town to compete in the biggest rodeo on the east coast in hopes to walk away with a lucrative sum of prize money. They will be put to the test as they make their way through seven challenging events including bareback riding, tie-down roping, saddle bronc riding, team roping, barrel racing, steer wrestling, and bull riding.

Tickets to the Rodeo range from $20-$80. Family-four packs including 4 tickets, 4 hot dogs, and 4 soft drinks are available as well as children, senior, military and group discounts. Tickets can be purchased at the Boardwalk Hall Box Office, all Ticketmaster locations by calling 800-736-1420 or at www.ticketmaster.com.

“With both the largest cash prize for a BBQ competition and the largest rodeo on the East Coast, Atlantic City has cornered the market on BBQ and broncos the weekend of October 5 & 6,” stated Liza Cartmell, president of the Atlantic City Alliance. “The combination of both events provides a reason for visitors to extend their stay and experience all that Atlantic City has to offer.”

The DO AC Smokin’ Hot BBQ Competition is produced by Smoke on the Water Productions. President & CEO Ron Cates had this to say about Atlantic City, “When the flames begin, barbecue enthusiasts and championship barbecue teams will descend upon Atlantic City for an unparalleled experience close to the world famous Boardwalk and what is fast becoming known as one of the premier barbecue competitions in the world.”

Cook teams are lining up to compete in Atlantic City with 81 registered from as close as Margate, NJ to as far away as Montreal, Canada. Besides the competition, the barbecue festival offers many activities for the entire family including live entertainment, an outdoor expo, grilling demonstrations, free product sampling, world champion barbecue vendors, and much more.

All teams are judged in the same four categories: ribs, chicken, brisket, and pork butt. There is also a BBQ sauce category. Certified judges “blindly” score each entry in the category with the criteria of presentation, taste, texture and tenderness. Judging is blind because each team presents their entries in white Styrofoam containers which have a number on bottom. The judges don’t know which team's BBQ they are scoring.

More than 135 certified BBQ judges have registered to taste and score these saucy creations on Sunday, October 6. Competitors will turn in their entries over a two hour time period – 12 noon chicken, 12:30pm ribs, 1pm pork, 1:30pm brisket, 2pm BBQ sauce. Visitors can also be the judge and vote for the People’s Choice Award from 2 – 4 pm on Sunday. Winners in each category and the Grand Champion will be announced at 5pm.
