Explorers to open season on November 9 vs. Manhattan

PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle men’s basketball team, coming off a trip to the NCAA Sweet 16, will open the 2013-14 schedule by hosting Manhattan on November 9, head coach Dr. John Giannini announced today.  The Atlantic 10 portion of the schedule will be announced at a later date.

“Fifty percent of the RPI is based on opponents’ records,” Giannini said. “With that in mind, we made every effort to schedule teams expected to have winning seasons and contend for conference championships.

“We also have games against teams representing the top conferences in the country. Our schedule will challenge us and gives us a chance to earn a high RPI, quality wins and build a postseason resume.”

The Explorers will host the Jaspers, the runner-up in the MAAC Tournament, in the season opener before welcoming Quinnipiac to Gola Arena on November 12.

Siena will be the opponent for the University’s Homecoming celebration on Saturday, November 16 at 3 PM which will be followed by a trip to in-state rival Penn State on November 19.

La Salle will then head to the Carribbean for the Paradise Jam in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The opening game will be on November 22 against Morgan State with the next contest coming either November 23 or 24 versus Vanderbilt or Providence (NIT). The final game of the tournament will be on November 25 against Maryland (NIT Semifinals), Northern Iowa, Marist or Loyola Marymount.

December will kick off with the Explorers hosting Hartford on December 4 followed by a trip to Madison Square Garden for the Holiday Festival against Stony Brook on December 7. That game is part of a doubleheader with Fordham and St. John’s squaring off in the second game.

The first Big 5 game of the season will be a short trip to NCAA qualifier Villanova on December 15, followed by hosting Wagner on December 19. For the second straight year, La Salle will visit fellow Sweet 16 participant Miami on December 22.

A Big 5 game at Penn kicks off the New Year on January 4 and the Explorers will also play Big 5 rival and NCAA qualifier Temple on January 18.

In the Atlantic 10, La Salle will play home-and-homes with Saint Joseph’s, Duquesne, George Washington and St. Bonaventure.

The Explorers will host league newcomer George Mason along with Saint Louis, Rhode Island and VCU in addition to the four teams above. Road trips will be to Dayton, Fordham, Richmond and Massachusetts.
