VIDEO from 10/16/10 CNBNEWS HUNTING AND FISHING COLUMN Events add to excitement during bugling season, 100th anniversary year. Year after year, Labor Day weekend kicks off a period of increased activity on Pennsylvania’s elk range. As elk begin ramping up their routines ahead of peak bugling season, visitors flock in greater numbers to areas where they can see the wild spectacle unfold. In a typical year, an estimated 75,000 to 100,000 people visit Elk County alone during the two-month span between Labor Day and Halloween. But 2013 isn’t a typical year in regard to Pennsylvania’s elk. Rather, it’s an extraordinary one. This year marks the 100th anniversary of efforts to restore elk to Pennsylvania, and in commemoration of that landmark anniversary, special events are planned each weekend through Columbus Day at sites on the elk range. With the added attractions and excitement over the anniversary, it’s hard to say how...

These steps include using Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) aircraft and expanding patrols by DEP conservation officers. The Administration is also providing the use of a Department of Agriculture lab for testing, a move that will greatly help the nonprofit Marine Mammal Stranding Center, on the front lines of responding to the deaths since early July. "Fortunately, the federal investigation into the dolphin deaths is making significant progress," DEP Commissioner Bob Martin said. "The Christie Administration is committed to doing...

By Joseph Palermo Today, once again, it feels like we’re being herded into supporting a military action in Syria that will end up, like the Iraq War, making the world an even more dangerous place than it is now. Then, as now, we see influential journalists tripping over themselves to fall into line. The British parliament’s vote against going along with the United States’ attack on Syria is a direct result of that country’s attempts to come to terms with the lies of the Iraq War. Unlike the United States, the people in the United Kingdom forced their government to convene a commission where former Prime Minister Tony Blair and other Iraq War luminaries were asked some uncomfortable questions. (When was the last time you saw George W. Bush or Dick Cheney grilled for their roles in fomenting the Iraq War?) The vote in the U.K. shows that there are...

By ROSE BOUBOUSHIAN (CN) - A Pennsylvania state trooper cannot dismiss claims that he sexually assaulted a woman facing criminal charges by luring her to a cemetery after a dismissal hearing, a federal judge ruled. After State Trooper Stephen Kleeman charged Faith Kintzel with summary harassment on April 7, 2010, she sued him in Federal Court. They agreed at a hearing in June 2010 that the charges would be dismissed if Kintzel complied with conditions for 60 days, Kintzel's complaint states. Kintzel claims she turned Kleeman down when he asked if she wanted to have coffee with him sometime after the hearing, but eventually agreed to accompany him to a cemetery where they could talk alone, fearing that the dismissal deal she had worked out would fall through if she refused. Kintzel claims she followed Kleeman's his patrol car to a cemetery, where he commented about her being clothed, which...

August 28, 2013 West Trenton, N.J. – The Labor Day weekend is considered the “unofficial” end of the summer, but don’t let it be the end of your life. There have been 337 motor vehicle fatalities in New Jersey so far this year. Those deaths are comprised of 187 drivers, 59 passengers, 80 pedestrians, and 11 pedalcyclists. “The numbers do not lie; fatal accidents continue to claim far too many lives on New Jersey’s roadways,” said Colonel Rick Fuentes, Superintendent of the New Jersey State Police. “Troopers will be watching for drivers that engage in unsafe actions including speeding, talking or texting on a cell phone, and driving while intoxicated.” This year’s national DWI program, “DRIVE SOBER OR GET PULLED OVER” is a prevention effort by law enforcement to deter impaired driving. State troopers and local police will be supporting this campaign during the Labor Day holiday period. According to...

Con Artist Gets His Due 08/27/13 There’s no limit to how low con artists will go to swindle victims out of their money—often targeting the elderly, the terminally ill, homeowners on the brink of losing their homes, even the lonely looking for companionship online. Here’s another category of victims to add to that list: members of religious communities who spend their lives tending to the sick and the poor. Earlier this month, a New Jersey man was sentenced to 18 years in prison for defrauding members of the Puerto Rico-based Dominican Sisters of the Rosary of Fatima and others of more than a million dollars. He was also ordered to pay $1 million in restitution to his victims. The scheme began back in 2009, when Adriano Sotomayor—born in Puerto Rico—obtained names and telephone numbers of certain Roman Catholic nuns and priests on the island…including an elderly nun from the Sisters of...

Judicial Watch is considering litigation challenging President Obama's rewriting of Obamacare. Specifically, President Obama has unilaterally rewritten the law to delay the "employer mandate," which was scheduled to go in effect on January 1, 2014, for at least a year. At the same time, he did not rewrite the law to delay the "individual mandate," which requires nearly all Americans to have Obama-approved health insurance by that same date or pay a tax penalty. Many Americans are caught in the middle. They are obligated to have Obama-approved health insurance, but their employers are not obligated to provide it, at least for another year. As a result, these Americans will be forced to purchase Obama-approved health insurance on an Obamacare-created health insurance exchange or pay the tax penalty. Either way, they're out-of-pocket. If you are going to have to purchase Obama-approved health insurance through an Obamacare-created health insurance exchange or pay...

August 26, 2013 Bill Donohue explains why the need for a petition: The Catholic community, led by the bishops, has voiced its objections to the Health and Human Services (HHS) mandate on several occasions. The Obama administration has made "accommodations" and other revisions, but the fundamental problem remains: the HHS mandate adopts a definition of what constitutes a "religious employer" that is entirely too narrow; and the religious liberty abridgement entailed in this edict represents an unfair burden on Catholic non-profit organizations, and Catholic-owned private businesses. The amount of time and money spent trying to reconcile the HHS mandate with legitimate First Amendment concerns has been considerable, and without a satisfactory conclusion. Indeed, almost 70 lawsuits have been filed. The only sensible outcome is for the administration to withdraw the mandate altogether. The problems inherent in ObamaCare are serious. From delaying "out-of-pocket costs" to postponing the employer mandate, it is...

THE CATHOLIC STAR HERALD In the spring of 1965 the Tropiano family moved from Calabria, Italy, to Philadelphia. Sam Tropiano was six years old and already involved with European soccer, having played it since he was able to run through the streets surrounded by the Ionian and Tyrrhenian seas. He was one of the few children in South Philly during the 1960s and 1970s to play the center-forward position because soccer was still in its formative years in America. But living in Philadelphia he soon discovered a new passion — Phillies baseball. That was the foundation for the most successful baseball coach at Bishop Eustace Prep School, Pennsauken, with 557 wins in 24 years. The Crusaders coach is also ranked fourth in total All-Time wins in New Jersey baseball. “I don’t see myself as a coach. I see myself as a teacher who happens to coach,” he said. It is...

It's literally getting Chippy out here By Kenneth Arthur @KennethArthurS on Aug 27 2013, 1:44p + Howard Smith-USA TODAY Sports Chip Kelly took over for a good coach at Oregon and made them great. Can he do that with the Eagles, will the offense work at the pro level, and can any of these "sleepers" turn back into actually-productive players this year? One of my least favorite football clichès would have to be when two teams are drawing a lot of personal foul penalties and throwing little punches and jabs and the announcers say that "ohhhh, it's getting chippy out here!" We are literally watching a sport where players are meant to hit each other as often and as hard as they possibly can. More team previews: Jaguars Titans Texans Colts Packers Lions BearsVikings Bills Patriots Jets Dolphins Cardinals Rams 49ers SeahawksBengals Browns Ravens Steelers Cowboys Redskins Every single...

HOBOKEN, N.J. (August 28, 2013) – The Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team will open its 2013 season Friday afternoon at the De Baun Athletic Complex against No. 8 Messiah College. The Ducks are coming off a 2012 season that saw the program’s first-ever Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Mid-Atlantic title, the Empire 8 regular-season title and a trip to the conference final. The Ducks also won 16 games against just seven losses which was the third-most victories in program history and seventh-straight season with double-digit victories. “Winning the ECAC title last year felt really good, ending the season strong and playing really good hockey” said third-year coach Emily Beach (Hoboken, N.J.). “That said, we were disappointed to not win E8s and get a bid to NCAAs, so we will look to avenge that loss this year and make a run in the NCAA tournament.” In 2013, Stevens will look...

BY MICHAEL HALTMAN Or has a race war already begun? Barack Obama, Al Sharpton and the Reverend Jesse Jackson have been consistent and vociferous participants in the discussion of race in the United States! Unfortunately, however, to date this participation has proven to be destructive, not constructive, with an endgame that is still somewhat unclear but getting clearer all of the time. So what exactly is the endgame for these men? The list below of black-on-white violence since the death of Trayvon Martin may provide some clarity as there has been little actual, and certainly no forceful, public mention by these three amigos of race baiting about any of these crimes. Why is that? Why is the only time this President or Sharpton speaks to a specific case it has to do with racial incidents that they cherry pick having the potential to incite and divide rather than heal and...

With apologies to the late, great Dinah Washington, who popularized María Graver’s fine song, What a Difference a Day Makes, we marvel at what a difference a year has made for Josh Horwitz, of the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, formerly known as the National Coalition to Ban Handguns. Last year, Horwitz told Sally Sara, an Australian reporter for ABC News, “I think the proliferation of firearms has made us more dangerous.” How many times have we heard that sort of line from the anti-gun crowd, as violent crime rates have plummeted to their lowest point in decades? But this month, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported that Horwitz has changed his tune, pardon the pun. Now, instead of claiming that violent crime correlates to the number of guns owned by the American people, Horwitz claims that crime correlates to the number of guns sold without a background check. What factor convinced...
