Have you ever noticed that, when you are in a hurry or stressed, your dog seems to be more needy than usual? Suddenly, Fido needs to go outside, cries to be petted, or brings you his favorite toy. That is because emotions travel down the leash!
If you are the pack leader, your dog picks up on your energy level and emotions. He can “read” your stress and is attempting to calm your behavior.
Think, for a moment, about pack hierarchy. If dogs are truly descended from wolves there are still some wolf-like behaviors remaining in their DNA. Therefore, when you, as the Alpha, display signs of fear, nervousness, or any other type of emotion, it is the pack’s job to reassure you and stick by your side.
One way in which you can calm your dog is for you to try and be calm. Firmly tell your dog to “Leave it” and have him lay down where he is able to see you but not interact with you. You are asserting your role as leader of the pack by doing so.
Brother of the Wolf is now taking applications for its September apprenticeship program. If dogs are your passion and you are looking for a new career, please call 856.981.8957 for more information.
