PHILADELPHIA – Saint Joseph’s senior righthander Kyle Mullen (Berwyn, Pa/St. Joseph’s Prep) has been named the Philadelphia Big 5 Baseball Pitcher of the Week. Mullen tied the school record for wins in a season on Friday night while the Hawks set a new team record for wins with their 26th of the year.
Mullen allowed one run and scattered eight hits while striking out eight in SJU’s 3-2 win at Saint Louis on Friday. He improved to 8-3 on the year, tying the Saint Joseph’s record for pitching victories in a season held by John Butz (1965) and Jed Johnson (1995). The win also gave the Hawks their 26th of the season, eclipsing the previous record of 25 set in 1995 and matched in 2012.
The weekly honor is the second of the season for the senior, and the seventh Big 5 Pitcher of the Week award of his career.
Mullen has set a number of records in 2013, including the school’s all-time wins and strikeout marks. He also set a new program record for career innings pitched, becoming just the second Hawk to pass the 300-inning plateau.
Last season, Mullen set a new record for innings pitched in a season and was the first SJU hurler to toss 100 innings. He also tied the single-season strikeout record of 90 set by Jamie Moyer in 1984.
The Hawks will close out the regular season this week with a three-game at Smithson Field against Rhode Island. First pitch in the series opener is set for Thursday at 3:00 p.m.
