press release May 16
PHILADELPHIA - For the third consecutive year, graduate student Kevin McDonnell (Moorestown, N.J./Camden Catholic) will represent Saint Joseph's in the 10,000m at the 2013 NCAA Division I Track and Field East Regional Preliminary Round, hosted by North Carolina A&T State University from Thursday, May 23 through Saturday, May 25 in Greensboro, N.C. Joining McDonnell in his first collegiate regional appearance will be 3000m-steeplechase standout, sophomore Logan Mohn (Shillington, Pa./Governor Mifflin).
The three days of competition will take place at Irwin Belk Track inside of Aggie Stadium and features the top athletes in the world east of the Mississippi. For each individual event contested at each of the preliminary championships competition sites, the top 48 declared student-athletes are accepted into competition, and both McDonnell and Mohn rank in the top 15 of their respective events. The West Preliminary will also run from May 23-25 and will take place in Austin, TX.
No stranger to the NCAA scene, McDonnell will return to the 10,000m on Thursday, May 23 at 9:40 p.m. Although the Moorestown, N.J. native has made the NCAA preliminaries for the past two years, taking home a 23rd-place finish in 2011 and 19th-place finish in 2012, his goal from the very start of the season has been to make it past the preliminaries.
"He's staring at the possibility and goal of making the NCAA finals," said men's track head coach Mike Glavin prior to the start of the indoor season. "He wants to be among the top 24 individuals who make it to the NCAA finals."
McDonnell shattered Saint Joseph's 31-year-old school record in the 10,000m with a time of 29:16.01 at Bucknell's Bison Outdoor Classic back on May 13, improving upon the original school-record time (29:43.50), set by John Crooke in 1982, by 27.49 seconds. The distance standout ranks 10th on the East Region's declared list.
Mohn, a sophomore out of Shillington, Pa., enters the weekend coming off of an SJU record-breaking performance at the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 4. The sophomore clocked in with a new personal-record time of 8:53.10 to break the 11-year record set by Ben Koch in 2002. With the time, Mohn ranks 13th on the East Region's declared list. Named the team's Most Valuable Player, Mohn will represent the Hawks on Friday, May 24 at 9:30 p.m.
The top 12 finishers from both the Eastern and Western Regions will advance to the 2013 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore. from June 5-8.
