Apr. 29, 2013

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - For the second consecutive week, freshman sensation Dannah Hayward (Wilkes Barre, Pa./James M. Coughlin) has been named the Atlantic 10 Women's Track and Field Rookie of the Week, the league office announced today. Hayward has been selected for meets competed Apr. 22-28 after once again breaking her own school record in the 400 meter hurdles at the 2013 Penn Relays this past weekend.

In the midst of a remarkable freshman campaign, Hayward entered the 400H Championship in her first collegiate Penn Relays on Thursday morning already in possession of the SJU school record in the event. Running in the fifth section, Hayward placed third in her heat en route to a 21st-place finish out of 54 competitors with yet another SJU record-breaking performance in 1:01.25, improving on her original record (1:01.41) by .16 seconds. The time stands as the fifth-fastest and top-freshman time in the Atlantic 10 and the 28th-fastest performance in ECAC standings.

Hayward entered the event coming off of a 1:01.46 performance at Princeton's Larry Ellis Invitational. The rookie took .21 seconds off of that time in her first collegiate Penn Relays.

In addition to her individual performance, Hayward also ran the first leg of her first collegiate Shuttle Hurdles Championship as the team clocked in at 1:03.26 for a ninth-place finish.

Hayward and the Hawks return to action this weekend at the 2013 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championships, scheduled from May 4-5, at the Irwin Belk Track and Field Center in Charlotte, N.C.
