(cnbnews.net)The new Planet Fitness gym, at the Brooklawn Shopping Center, opened last Rds_news week in a section of the former K-Mart store. K-Mart closed the store two -years ago. Located in the same plaza as the ShopRite food market, the gym is opened and staffed 24 hours, seven days a week. It also appears the long awaited repairs on the shopping center's parking lot are finally nearing completion.

Last November CNBNews reporter Mark Matthews broke the story about the gym opening in Brooklawn before it was announced publicly.

Late Saturday afternoon, November 17, 2012,  Matthews saw smoke coming from behind the old K-Mart. A fire had broken out in a trash container. After investigating it further Matthews wrote about what he saw that evening,

Why would there be anything in the compactor when the store (K-Mart) has been closed for two years? And why are they fixing up the parking lot and resurfacing it? According to an employee in another nearby business, a well known national Fitness chain has rented the Brooklawn K-mart location for a new fitness center, and the parking lot work is part of the lease agreement!”

Two days later CNBNews was able to confirm that a Planet Fitness franchise was in fact coming to the shopping center.

Police are still looking for the thief or thieves who broke into the gym's contruction site on February 23 and stole 60 feet of copper pipe from the building. If you have any information about the incident your are asked to call the Brooklawn police at 456-0750.

UNABLE TO WORK--In the past three decades, the number of Americans who are on disability has skyrocketed. According to the National Public Radio (NPR), the rise has come even as medical advances have allowed many more people to remain on the job, and new laws have banned workplace discrimination against the disabled. Every month, 14 million people now get a disability check from the government. Depending on how the numbers are crunched the cost to taxpayers for this program totals between $175 to $260 billion a year. The federal government spends more money each year on cash payments for disabled former workers than it spends on food stamps and welfare combined. The Disability Trust Fund will run out of money by 2016, and then what? (story idea submitted by Jack Heath)        http://apps.npr.org/unfit-for-work/

A NEW SHOPPING CENTER-- A developer has proposed a shopping center for the former Newton Diner site on White Horse Pike in Oaklyn between East Park and East Holly avenues. The diner was destroyed by fire in 2010. The developer, 160 Atlantic Inc., of Washington Township, appeared before the Haddon Township Planning Board last week for preliminary and final site plan approval of the project. According to the Courier Post eight stores are planned for the complex. The board also considered requests for more than a dozen variances, including waivers to rules that require buildings to be set back a certain distance from their property lines and that require a loading zone at the site.
