UNION, NJ – The Rowan University softball team swept Kean University, 9-2 and 4-0 on Friday.  It was the first conference doubleheader for both teams.    

The Profs, ranked 22nd, are 17-3 overall and the Cougars are 10-8 on the season. Rowan has a 13-game win streak.  

Right-hander LeAnne Miller (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) earned her 10th win on the season in the first game.  Miller (10-2) gave up six hits and two earned runs. Courtney Yard (so. Stockton, NJ/Hunterdon Central) was the losing pitcher.  She (4-6) allowed nine hits and nine runs, five were earned.

Designated player Ashley DeYoung (fr. Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) was two for four at the plate with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored.  Shortstop Shilah Snead (fr. Malaga, NJ/Delsea Reg.) contributed with two hits (three at bats), two RBIs, a home run and two runs scored.  Second baseman Alysa Romero (so. Newfield, NJ/Vineland) and center fielder Shannon Costello (so. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) each chipped in with a double and two RBIs.  Romero also scored one run.  Left fielder Jennifer Arcella (jr. Hillsdale, NJ/Pascack Valley) and first baseman Stephanie Labas (sr. Millville, NJ/Millville) added one hit and one run scored apiece.

For Kean, second baseman Katie Schuh (sr. Mount Holly, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) registered two hits (four at bats), a double and two runs scored.  Right fielder Megan Cegielski (jr. Stockton, NJ/Hunterdon Central) had two hits in four trips to the plate.  Center fielder Sandra Binkiewicz (jr. Belleville, NJ/Belleville) had one hit in three at bats and one RBI.  

The Profs led 1-0 after a RBI single by DeYoung in the first inning that scored Snead.  In the third inning, Rowan scored four runs and Kean had one in the bottom half.  Romero knocked in Labas and DeYoung with a double to right center. Costello registered a two-RBI double.  Schuh led off with a double to right field and scored on an error.  

The Cougars’ last run came in the fifth.  Binkiewicz had a base hit and Schuh crossed the plate.  The Profs tacked on four more runs in the sixth inning.  Snead and DeYoung both recorded two-run homers.  

Right-hander Krysti Maronski (jr. Woodbury Heights, NJ/GCIT) pitched her second shutout in the nightcap.  Maronski (6-1) scattered seven hits.  Casey Glatts (fr. Aston, PA/Archmere Academy) took the loss on the mound. She (3-2) gave up four earned runs.  

Arcella was two for three with one RBI and one run scored.  Catcher Meagan Lee (jr. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) and Labas both had one hit and one RBI.  Romero produced two hits (four at bats) and one RBI.  

All four runs came in the seventh inning.  Arcella had a single down the left field line that scored right fielder Katie Bussman (so. Brick, NJ/Monsignor Donovan). Bussman pinch ran for pinch hitter Amanda Toomer (so. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) who got on base with a walk.  Labas followed with a base hit and third baseman Jess Phillips (so. Woolwich, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) came home.  Lee and Romero had back-to-back RBI singles.  Arcella and pinch runner Allison Nolan (fr. Middletown, NJ/Middletown S.) scored.

Next week, Rowan hosts conference opponent William Paterson University on Tuesday, April 2 at 3 p.m.
