ROWAN BASEBALL DEFEATS GWYNEDD-MERCY COLLEGE, 4-2

GWYNEDD, PA – The Rowan University baseball team defeated Gwynedd-Mercy College, 4-2 on Thursday. The Profs are 11-4 overall while the Griffins have a 9-6 record.
Right-hander Ryan Easterday (so. Westmont, NJ/Haddon Twp.) threw 6.2 innings for the win. He (2-2) scattered eight hits and gave up two earned runs. Easterday struck out eight batters. Lefty Kyle Brown (sr. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) pitched the last inning for the save. Righty Andrew Schaefer (jr. Penndel, PA/Conwell-Egan) had the loss on the mound. He allowed seven hits and four runs, three were earned.
Right fielder Nick Kreiger (so. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) led Rowan with two hits in four at bats and two RBIs. Catcher C.J. Szymczak (sr. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) contributed with two hits (four at bats) and one RBI. Second baseman Mark Benak (jr. South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) was two for four with a double and one run scored. First baseman Sean Kelly (sr. North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) chipped in with a double and one RBI. Third baseman Kevin McMenamin (so. Maple Shade, NJ/Maple Shade) produced two hits and designated hitter Casey Grimes (so. Gibbstown, NJ/Paulsboro) scored two runs.
For Gwynedd-Mercy, left fielder David Blount (fr. Croydon, PA/Harry S. Truman) had two hits in four at bats and one RBI. Shortstop Jordano Rodriquez (so. Philadelphia, PA/Mariana Bracetti) registered one hit (four at bats) and one RBI. Right fielder Rick Elfreth (so. Washington Twp., NJ/St. Augustine) and second baseman Kurt Taylor (fr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) tallied one hit and one run scored apiece.
The Profs were ahead 2-0 after scoring one run in the second and third innings. In the second, Grimes led off with a walk. He later came home a single by Kreiger. Kelly drove in Benak in the third inning with a double. With two outs, Benak reached base with a double. The Griffins got on the scoreboard with one run in the fifth. Rodriguez singled home Elfreth.
Rowan scored two runs in the sixth for a 4-1 advantage. Szymanski knocked in Grimes with a base hit and Perez crossed the plate on Kreiger’s single. The Griffins’ last run came in the seventh inning. Taylor doubled and scored on a single by Blount.
Rowan starts its conference schedule at home on Saturday, March 30 against Ramapo College at 11:30 a.m.
