Raptors roll out bats to outlast Gallaudet, 14-9

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (March 21, 2013) – The Rutgers University-Camden baseball team put on its hitting shoes here Thursday at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.

Nicco Esgro...three hits

The Scarlet Raptors pounded out 20 hits as they outlasted Gallaudet University, 14-9.


The Scarlet Raptors improve to 9-6, while the Bison fall to 7-11.


Junior second baseman Luis Maldonado (Ponce, Puerto Rico/Pennsauken), junior designated hitterGeorge Spingler (Gloucester City, NJ/Gloucester Catholic), senior leftfielder Nicco Esgro (Glassboro, NJ/Glassboro) and freshman shortstop Joe Sigismondi (Blackwood, NJ/Highland Regional)collected three hits apiece for the Scarlet Raptors, with Sigismondi and Maldonado both adding two RBIs.

Senior rightfielder Donnie Haines (Carneys Point, NJ/Penns Grove) went 2-for-4 with two runs and five RBIs, including a three-run home run in the fifth inning and a two-run double in the seventh. Haines’ home run sparked the Raptors’ four-run fifth inning, which gave Rutgers-Camden the lead for good at 7-3. The closest Gallaudet came after that was 7-6, following a three-run top of the sixth inning.

Luis Maldonado...three-hit game

Rutgers-Camden broke away with a pair of three-spots in the seventh and eighth innings.


In addition to the quartet with three hits, Haines, sophomore first basemanConnor Hall (Delran, NJ/Delran) and senior catcher Shaune Collins (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) each collected two hits.


Junior pitcher Jim Turner (Medford, NJ/Holy Cross) earned his first win of the season, working five innings and allowing five hits, four walks and five earned runs. Turner (1-0) struck out two.

George Spingler...three hits


Junior Dashon Jones (Newark, NJ/East Side)picked up his first save with 1-2/3 hitless shutout innings. He walked one and struck out four, including the side in the ninth.


The Scarlet Raptors resume play Friday in Winter Haven with a 12 p.m. game against McDaniel College at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.
