Dogs, like people, need a healthful diet. By keeping Fido trim, you are adding years to his life.
An overweight dog is sluggish, may develop problems walking, and the extra pounds may cause heart disease. A healthy meal in the morning with a snack later in the day is the best way to regulate your dog’s intake of calories.
Some folks prefer to feed their pets twice a day; if you like this method, be sure to cut down the portions for both meals. It is best to present Fido with his bowl of food and then take it away after about 15 minutes. If you are filling your dog’s bowl and allowing him to nibble all day, you may be over-feeding him. In addition, you will be unable to regulate his bowel habits. A good rule of thumb is to go for that ‘necessary’ walk 15 minutes after your dog eats his main meal of the day.
Remember, also, that tartar building up on his teeth can lead to tooth decay, infections, and bad breath so a weekly brushing is also important. Make sure the product does not contain Xylitol, an artificial sweetener that is poisonous to dogs.
