In interviews, new Pope Francis confirms commitment to poor

Philadelphia, March 15, 2013 – Mayor Michael A. Nutter and the Philadelphia Streets Department announced that the 6^th Annual Philly Spring Cleanup will be held on Saturday, April 13 (rain date is Saturday, April 20). Mayor Nutter launched the countdown to the citywide cleanup at the Community Women’s Education Project (CWEP) in Kensington. Residents can volunteer for a Philly Spring Cleanup project online at www.phillyspringcleanup.com.

“I’m continually inspired by the ongoing citizen engagement that is part of the Philly Spring Cleanup,” said Mayor Nutter. “Community involvement is the impetus for a successful cleanup season and a beautiful city. This idea also shines in the Philly Future program, in which participants are developing civic pride as a result of their daily work. In turn, the participants take this pride and instill it in their lives and their city.”

The event was held at CWEP to highlight the Philly Future Track Program, which launched in January. The program is designed to help prepare Philadelphia’s young adults for the workforce by providing paid work experience through the Streets Department and life skills training at CWEP. Philly Future Track Participants are working to become better citizens with strong civic pride and the next generation of Philly Spring Cleanup leaders.

Mayor Nutter was joined by Streets Department Commissioner Clarena I.W. Tolson, Councilman Mark Squilla, Deputy Streets Commissioner Donald Carlton, Alexis Brown of CWEP, Philly Future Track program participants, Kensington residents and Philly Spring Cleanup sponsors and partner organizations.

Commissioner Tolson stressed the importance of participating in this year’s cleanup and continuing the effort all year long. “The Philly Spring Cleanup is all about establishing civic pride, creating a better quality of life and taking ownership of our neighborhoods not just one day, but every day,” she said. “We need to build off the momentum established during the cleanup and ‘Keep Up the Sweep Up’ year-round.”

Major Philly Spring Cleanup sponsors include Waste Management, Recyclebank, Covanta Energy, Republic Services, BigBelly Solar Compactor and ReCommunity Building.

City residents and organizations can become involved in the 6^th Annual Philly Spring Cleanup by registering a project site or by volunteering on April 13.
