Fitzgerald, Szyszko Named to A10 Academic All- Conference Team

March 8, 2013 PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Senior swimmers Daniel Fitzgerald and Blase Szyszko have been named to the Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Academic All-Conference team, announced yesterday by the Atlantic 10 office. Student-athletes were selected based on their performance during the season, at the Atlantic 10 Championships, and in the classroom – in order to make the team, nominees must retain a cumulative GPA of at 3.0 or greater.

Fitzgerald, a nursing major, had to contend with the grueling classroom schedule of early-morning clinicals and demanding course material in addition to the 20-hour-a-week swimming regiment. In the end, Fitzgerald had a fantastic end to his collegiate swimming career, picking up three personal best times and three top-seven finishes, including a silver medal in the 100 yard backstroke. Additionally, he broke the school and Atlantic 10 Conference record in the 100 back (48.25) and the school record in the 100 yard freestyle (44.87).

Szyszko has long been a major contributor to the swim program as well as the university. He has served as the La Salle SAAC president for the last two years where he solicits student-athlete feedback and encourages participation in school and community service. Furthermore, Szyszko was selected by the NCAA as the Atlantic 10 SAAC representative to the NCAA. The honor makes Szyszko responsible to represent the student-athlete voice of all the A-10 schools. At the 2013 championship, Szyszko notched a eighth-place 2:04.68 in the final of the 200 yard breaststroke and a 12th place finish (57.03) in the 100 yard breaststroke.
