Camden signs first pitchers for 2013 season

CAMDEN, N.J. – The Camden Riversharks have re-signed four members of the 2012 squad and announced the signing of a free agent for the upcoming season.

Santo Hernandez, Paddy Matera, Mike McGuire and Eduardo Perez will all return to the Riversharks for the 2013 season after playing with the team in 2012. Additionally, outfielder Stantrel Smith was added to the Riversharks roster for 2013.

As one of two pitchers signed by the Riversharks to this point, Santo Hernandez rejoins the Riversharks for the third consecutive season. He has pitched 10 seasons professionally and was a member of the Philadelphia Phillies organization in 2009.

The Toms River, N.J. native, Paddy Matera, starts his fourth season after spending time as an infielder for the Newark Bears and the Coastal Bend Thunder before arriving in Camden last year.

Mike McGuire is entering his sixth year as a pitcher in professional baseball and second with Camden. McGuire spent the majority of those six seasons playing for the Cleveland Indians and Philadelphia Phillies organizations.

Infielder Eduardo Perez returns to Camden for the eighth season of his career and second with the Riversharks. Before Perez joined the Riversharks, he played for six seasons in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization.

Stantrel Smith, a 10-year veteran, was also signed by the Riversharks this week. He has played for nine different teams in his nine seasons as a professional outfielder. Smith began his career as a minor league prospect for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim ballclub and played within their system for four seasons.

“I could not be happier about re-signing so many of our players from last year,” said Adam Lorber, the General Manager of the Camden Riversharks. “The signing of a veteran free agent like Stantrel Smith and inking our returning players gives us the best chance for a successful 2013 campaign.”
