Houston School Cheated, Counselor Says

By CAMERON LANGFORD HOUSTON (CN) - The Houston public school system demoted a counselor for truthfully reporting that her high school's administration inflated its graduation rate so it could get an "Acceptable" rating from Texas, the counselor claims in court. Sabrina Norman sued the Houston Independent School District in Harris County Court. She claims that the high school administration was so desperate to graduate students that it gave them 40 hours of credit for attending a 4-hour Baptist Church service. Norman was hired to work at Sam Houston High School in June 2008, and as the school counselor it was her job to schedule students' classes. While doing so, she says, she became concerned by excessive absences on students' records. "On those documents, the students did not earn credits for the listed courses because the students had excessive absences," the complaint states. Norman says students need 24 credits to graduate.... Statement by Secretary Panetta on the Passing of General Norman Schwarzkopf

The men and women of the Department of Defense join me in mourning the loss of General Norman Schwarzkopf, whose 35 years of service in uniform left an indelible imprint on the United States military and on the country. His bravery during two tours in Vietnam earned him three silver stars, and set him on the path lead our troops into battle in Grenada, and then to take charge of the overall allied effort in the first Gulf War as Commander of United States Central Command. The Main Stream Media's Political Agenda

To the Editor: Each December we see a rerun of the news events of the past year. This year we went through primaries and the general election with innuendoes and half-truths. Television screens were filled with would-be presidential candidates. During Republican primary debates, much was done by the media to “undress” the candidates. A selection was made. Then, an old media question-and-answer sequence was pulled out in which Mitt Romney, the selected candidate, fumbled an explanation of why 47 percent would not vote for him, so it would matter little what he said or did. The media screamed about the rich man. Now print and electronic news media have publicized President Barack Obama as the “Person of the Year” as anointed by Time magazine. Four years ago, a select few opposing voices exposed this untested, clichéd candidate who talked of hope and change, for various questionable acts. But little was... Read more →

Daily Kos: Newark Star Ledger Endorses Political Corruption

This scheme was uncovered by the State Comptroller's Report on DRPA Corruption. And guess who condemned the Norcross' backroom practices? The Star Ledger again: The political boss George Norcross holds no job or title at the Delaware River Port Authority. Yet in the state comptroller’s scathing report about financial mismanagement there, guess who plays a starring role? Turns out, Norcross got kickbacks for steering insurance contracts from the state agency, according to the report... Not surprising, since the Democratic power broker runs South Jersey — but prefers to do so behind the scenes. Norcross, also the biggest name in the state’s insurance brokerage business, allegedly orchestrated a payment of $410,000 to his own company in return for recommending another insurance broker for the authority. An additional payment went to a second broker, Michael Martucci, who happens to be an acquaintance of Norcross’ wife. When asked by the comptroller exactly what... Read more →

Toys Go Boom

By ROBERT KAHN Courthouse News The coolest Christmas present my brothers and I got when we were kids was a giant chemistry set. It had stuff you'd be arrested for trying to buy now. All I remember about it is making ink, and of course, making stuff to blow things up. All the kids knew the recipe for black powder: charcoal, sulphur and potassium nitrate. We went through that potassium nitrate like it was going out of style. Then we had to go to the drug store to buy more. I remember it like it was yesterday. The pharmacist, in his long white coat, cast a wary eye upon the three of us and said, "You boys aren't buying this to make black powder, are you?" "What?" we said. "No!" we said. "Can you make black powder with this?" we said, gazing at one another in alarm. "Gosh!" we said.... Read more →

Each year, communities around the world are invigorated by the extraordinary and tireless efforts of District Administrators, Assistant District Administrators and more than one million local Little League officials and volunteers. At Little League International, we recognize that you, the volunteers, are the foundation strength of this incredible movement and we can never say thank you enough. Much success was enjoyed by our program in 2012, as we celebrated our 73rdseason, and approach our... Read more →

Archbishop Chaput: Advent's message relevant in wake of tragedy

Archbishop Feehan of Chicago (Photo credit: Wikipedia) Philadelphia, Pa., Dec 18, 2012 / 11:28 am (CNA/EWTN News).- The message of Advent is applicable in today’s world, especially in light of the school shooting in Newtown, Conn., Archbishop Charles J. Chaput of Philadelphia said in his Dec. 17 column. “In these final days of Advent, the Church urges us to lift up our hearts and prepare to rejoice,” he said. “There’s nothing remotely naïve in this call to joy; the Church knows the harshness of the world far too well for empty pieties.” Even in the face of tragedy, such as the recent elementary school shooting in which a lone gunman killed his mother and 26 students and faculty at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Archbishop Chaput said that God is present. When trying to comprehend the violence and evil that took place that day, people will ask how God could allow... Read more →
