Mount Ephraim Escapes Severe Damage From Hurricane Sandy

By Leigh Anne Hubbs Gloucester City News Sandy (a hurricane/nor’easter combo) hit the Jersey Shore October 29, but thankfully the Borough of Mount Ephraim escaped with very minimal damage. After attending a meeting of emergency personnel the day before Sandy made landfall, Mayor Joseph Wolk said he knew the town was in good hands, and that whatever needed to get done would get done. The Mayor said that the Police Department, Fire Department, Public Works Department, MEPRI and the Office of Emergency Management did an excellent job organizing before the storm. The volunteer firefighters staffed the Fire House around the clock for two days, and Firefighters Dan Tokolish Sr., John Lafferty III, Ryan Holmes, and Nick DiPaolo traveled to Ocean County with a pumper (fire apparatus) to help with clean up in harder hit areas. “We are blessed to have these kinds of volunteers,” said Mayor Wolk regarding the members... Bishops Reject Left-Wing Agenda

CATHOLIC LEAGUE FOR RELIGIOUS AND CIVIL RIGHTS Bill Donohue comments as follows: Last week, Catholic left-wingers felt emboldened. This week they are in despair. At the meeting of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops in Baltimore, the bishops once again committed themselves to the civil rights of the unborn, the defense of marriage, and the cause of religious liberty. Thus those Catholics who reject the Church’s teachings on abortion and marriage, and who support the anti-Catholic mandate being imposed by Health and Human Services, lost big time. Moreover, a vaguely worded document on the poor, which was not distributed to the bishops until they arrived at the meeting, was shot down. It is important for the practicing-Catholic community—the only subset that really counts—to understand that there are any number of front groups out there who deceitfully use the Catholic label to advance their agenda. Three such entities that are... Read more →

Bill Donahue: Obama Joins Manger Scene

Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights November 13, 2012 Bill Donohue comments as follows: The Italians are famous for creating novel nativity scenes, but this year they outdid themselves by including President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle. Look for the ACLU to import the Obama crèche and have it erected on the White House lawn, making the case that this is a free speech issue, not a church and state matter. And because some of the figurines hold a sign that says, “God Bless America,” look for Obama’s fans to thank him for his blessing. November 12, 2012, Trenton, NJ – Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Bob Martin today praised the well-coordinated response by a dedicated team of public and private groups to a major diesel fuel spill in the Arthur Kill caused by Hurricane Sandy, saying it limited what could have been major environmental damage to the waterway and surrounding areas. A record tidal surge caused by the storm dislodged and at least one massive bulk fuel tank belonging to the Motiva Oil Tank Facility in the Sewaren section of Woodbridge Township, spilling some 378,000 gallons of low sulfur diesel fuel – including approximately 277,000 gallons that escaped a containment area and entered the Arthur Kill, which is the tidal strait and navigational channel that separates New Jersey and Staten Island. An intensive cleanup and containment effort was initiated immediately after the storm subsided, coordinated by the U.S. Coast Guard, working closely with Motiva... Read more →

Op-Ed: The Reign of Obama, the Great Divider, Continues | cnbnews.net

BY DAN WEBER - From the moment you assumed power- you began to divide the people. Instead of uniting us- you chose to divide us. When you ran for office you made many promises, which is not unusual for politicians, but soon it became evident that your promises were falsehoods. You said you would work with the opposition party- but you insulted them, several times, in person, in public. Your tactic was to cut them out of any decision making, as you did with Obamacare. You said you would have a transparent administration, where the people would know what was going on and that C-SPAN would film what used to be secret negotiations- instead you kept C-SPAN out and your minions held meetings behind closed, locked doors. You accused the prior administration of being unpatriotic by increasing our National Debt- yet you knew your programs could not be paid for... Read more →

Senior Zach Adler (McKinney, Texas) scored the third goal and assisted the second for Stevens. The Ducks jumped out ahead quickly. On the left side, Dunbar overcame a 10-yard head-start by a Haverford defender and outraced him to the ball. Dunbar’s speed led to a breakaway for the Ducks; he centered the ball to a wide-open Joe Cellitti who shook down the goalkeeper with a great move and buried it in the twine for the early Stevens lead. A Return to Judicial Activism by Adam Freedman - City Journal

Tuesday’s election victory means that President Obama will have four more years to reshape the federal judiciary. While it remains to be seen whether he can achieve any legislative victories in the face of Republican opposition, there is little doubt that he will, for the most part, get to appoint the judges of his choice. Four justices on the Supreme Court are in their mid- to late seventies now: Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Antonin Scalia, Anthony Kennedy, and Stephen Breyer. With past as prelude, we can expect any Obama nominees to be reliably liberal in the mold of his two appointments from the first term, Justices Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor. At a minimum, the president will likely replace the aging liberals Ginsburg and Breyer with younger models. But it’s also possible that Kennedy or Scalia, or both, could leave the bench during the next four years, presenting Obama with an... Read more →

Bill Donohue: Some Thoughts on the Catholic Vote

November 9, 2012 Bill Donohue comments on the Catholic vote: Catholics are a quarter of the electorate, and they voted for Obama over Romney by the same margin as the total electorate, 50%-48%. Contrary to what many pundits are saying, this suggests that the bishops’ campaign for religious liberty, waged against the Health and Human Services mandate, actually paid off: Obama got 54% of the Catholic vote in 2008 to McCain’s 45%. Some commentators talk about the Catholic vote as if it were monolithic, and others say it doesn’t exist. It would be more accurate to say there are four Catholic votes: practicing and non-practicing; white and Latino. Among practicing Catholics, Obama received 42% to Romney’s 57%; among non-practicing Catholics, Obama picked up 56% while Romney got 42%. White Catholics gave Obama 40% of their votes while Romney earned 59%; Latino Catholics gave Obama 71% of their votes while Romney... Read more →

Morning Bell: What Does the Election Mean for Obamacare?

What’s next for Obamacare now? The bad news is that many of the health care law’s serious effects were delayed until after the election. Ten of its 18 new tax hikes have yet to kick in. And there is still so much about the law that we don’t even know. Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D–CA) was absolutely right when she famously remarked in 2010 that “we have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it.” Thus far, we have seen revelations of increasing costs, higher taxes, and a flood of directives from Washington bureaucrats—yet there are countless major features of the law that have not been decided. Just a few of the questions that remain: What will a qualified health plan look like? What will be in the essential benefits package that insurers are required to provide? How will the employer and individual... Read more →
