SPARKILL, N.Y. – Senior guard Devonne Richardson (Milford Mill Academy/Baltimore, Md.) scored a game-high 17 points and added 13 rebounds as Goldey-Beacom College (1-0) overcame a two-point half-time deficit to edge St. Thomas Aquinas (0-1) by a 58-51 margin in the season opener for both teams at Aquinas Hill on Friday evening.

Richardson, who recorded the 31st “double double” of her career, tallied nine of her points after the intermission as the Lightning rallied from a 28-26 deficit to earn their first season-opening win since the 2008-09 season.

Trailing by a two-point margin to start the second half, the Lightning scored eight of the first 11 points after the intermission to take a 34-31 lead with 17:13 remaining. Senior forward Irene Hudson (Corcoran H.S./Syracuse, N.Y.) scored four of the Lightning’s eight points during the run.

But, the Spartans answered by going on a 16-6 run over the next eight minutes to take a 47-40 advantage on a lay-up by junior guard Briana Cook (Paterson Catholic H.S./Paterson, N.J.), who had four points during the spurt.

Led by four points from Richardson and senior guard Ashley Rosario (Harry S. Truman H.S./Levittown, Pa.), the Lightning regained the lead by scoring the next 13 points for a 53-47 cushion with 5:13 left in regulation.

From there, the Lightning limited St. Thomas Aquinas to just four points to secure the victory.

After the Lightning jumped out to a 12-6 lead in the opening 8:17 of the first half, the Spartans used a 10-4 run to tie the game at 16-16 on a Cook lay-up with 4:28 left before the intermission. The Spartans led by as many as four points before ending the first half with a two-point edge after five straight points from sophomore forward Ashley Motrechuk (St. Peter’s H.S./Staten Island, N.Y.).

Richardson led the Lightning to the victory by making 5 of 11 field goal attempts. She also converted seven of her eight free throw attempts while contributing a team-high four assists. Meanwhile, senior guard Jacinda Jones (Concord H.S./Claymont, Del.) added nine points and five rebounds while Hudson scored nine points with four rebounds.

Motrechuk scored a team-high 17 points for the Spartans in a losing effort, making 7 of 17 shots from the floor. She also connected on three of seven three-point field goal attempts.

Cook added 13 points and 6 rebounds for St. Thomas Aquinas, which was limited to 8 of 23 shooting from the field in the second half.
The Lightning will finish play at the ECC/CACC Conference Challenge on Saturday afternoon when they play the University of the District of Columbia at 2 p.m.
