Arrest Made in Upper Merion Murders

Baby.jpg,AssetGUID,cbe84a34-4490-474b-a9592d0a481e18feMontgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman, Upper Merion Township Police Chief Thomas Nolan, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Philadelphia Division, Special Agent in Charge George Venizelos, announce the arrest of Raghunandan Yandamuri for the murders of both 10 month old Saanvi Venna and her 61 year old grandmother, Satyavathi Venna at the Marquis Apartments, 251 West DeKalb Pike in Upper Merion Township on Monday, October 22, 2012.
 
On Monday, October 22, 2012, at 1:16 PM, the Upper Merion Township Police Department responded to apartment C-603 for a reported homicide and child abduction. Investigators identified the missing child as Saanvi Venna, Asian Indian female, age 10 months. The body of Satyavathi Venna, age 61 was discovered inside the apartment. Venna is the paternal grandmother of Saanvi Venna and was babysitting the child The Pennsylvania State Police issued an Amber Child Abduction Alert at the request of the Upper Merion Township Police. Over the last five days, local, state, federal authorities scoured the region in search of Saanvi Venna. In the early morning hours of Friday October 26, 2012, the defendant directed authorities to Saanvi’s body.

 
DA Ferman and Chief Nolan extend their thanks to all of the investigators and staff of the many agencies involved, as well as the countless members of the community who supported the family and law enforcement during this investigation. In addition to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Fort Washington Field Office, the Upper Merion Township Police Department and the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office and Detective Bureau, agencies assisting in the search and rescue operation and homicide investigation include: Federal Bureau Investigation Crisis Negotiations Unit and Behavioral Analysis Unit (both in Quantico, Virginia), King of Prussia Fire Company, Lafayette Ambulance, Volunteer Medical Services of Lansdale and Montgomery County Police Academy.
 
Defendant is charged with Murder of the First Degree, Murder of the Second Degree, Kidnapping, Burglary, Robbery, Theft By Unlawful Taking and Abuse of Corpse.
 
Defendant was arraigned on October 26, 2012 in front of District Judge James Gallagher, 128 West 4th Street, Bridgeport, PA.
 
First Assistant District Attorney Kevin Steele and Assistant District Attorney Samantha Cauffman, who leads the child abuse team, will prosecute this case.
