Duo Ranked Among Team’s Scoring Leaders Last Year
WILMINGTON, Del. – Junior guard A.J. Picard (Souderton Area H.S./Skippack, Pa.) and sophomore guard Marcus Porter (Howard H.S./Wilmington, Del.) have been selected to serve as captains for the 2012-13 Goldey-Beacom College men’s basketball team, it has been announced by Coach Chuck Hammond.
“Having two captains that are only a sophomore and junior exercise the youth of this team,” Coach Hammond said. “A.J. and Marcus have provided a solid foundation that I believe can help us be successful for not only this year, but for years to come. I know both of them will work hard in placing an ultimate goal on the team’s success.”
An honorable mention All-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference selection last year, Picard was the Lightning’s third-leading scorer last year with a 13.7 average and led the team by making 80.1 per cent of his free throw attempts. He scored in double figures 22 times last year, including a season-high 23 points at Lincoln (Pa.) on Nov. 22 and at Shippensburg on Nov. 29.
“I saw tremendous growth by A.J. from his freshman year to his sophomore year as both a player and a leader,” Coach Hammond said. “He has worked extremely hard during the off-season and has the full respect of the entire team and coaching staff.”
Meanwhile, Porter earned second team All-CACC notice as a freshman after leading the Lightning with a 16.7 scoring average. He also averaged 6.1 rebounds per game and ranked second on the team with 50 assists.
Porter scored a season-high 32 points against Dominican on Dec. 30 and added 29 points against Holy Family on Dec. 3.
“On a team comprised of six seniors last year, Marcus showed impressive leadership abilities as a freshman,” Coach Hammond said. “He was not shy about his views on the team and I believe it made us a stronger unit.”
Led by Picard and Porter, the Lightning will open the 2012-13 season on Saturday, Nov. 10 by facing Southern Connecticut State in the University of Bridgeport Classic at 6 p.m.
