YORK, PA – The Rowan University women’s volleyball team went 1-1 on the first day of the Spartan Invitational. The Profs lost to Eastern University, 3-0 and defeated Centenary College, 3-0.

Against Eastern (15-2), the set scores were 25-12, 25-15 and 25-20. The Eagles were led by outside hitter Kearby Benak (jr. Houston, TX/Langham Creek) with 14 kills and seven digs. Outside hitter Lauren Sproles (so. Lititz, PA/Warwick) and middle hitter Kaitlyn Gochenauer (fr. Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) registered eight kills apiece. Setter Amy Guarino (so. Pottstown, PA/Pope John Paul II) collected 26 assists. Setter Rikki Schlager (fr. Lititz, PA/Manheim Twp.) added 12 assists, while libero Kelly Groff (sr. Audubon, PA/Methacton) had 12 digs.

For the Profs, middle blocker Nikki Binetti (so. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) compiled six kills. Outside hitter/middle blocker Morgan Mende (fr. Glen Rock, NJ/Glen Rock) and outside hitter/middle blocker Danielle Havlicek (fr. Midland Park, NJ/Midland Park) each contributed with five kills. Setter Nicole Ciandella (jr. Hoboken, NJ/Roselle Catholic) tallied 22 assists and libero Lauren Ruffalo (jr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) had eight digs.

Versus Centenary (4-15), the set scores were 25-4, 25-13 and 25-19. Rowan outside hitter/middle blocker Krissy Collins (jr. Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) posted nine kills and a .615 hitting percentage. Outside hitter/middle blocker Elaina Hansen (jr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) and Mende both had seven kills. Hansen added three blocks. Ciandella recorded 29 assists and seven digs. Ruffalo chipped in with seven digs and six service aces.

For the Cyclones, middle blocker/middle hitter Erika Chu (sr. Galloway, NJ/Absegami) registered nine kills. Setter Jelena Markovic (sr. Brcko, Bosnia and Herzegovina/The Economic School) totaled seven kills, 12 assists, 11 digs and three service aces. Setter/opposite Kelli McMenamin (sr. Warminster, PA/William Tennant) had five kills and eight assists.

The two-day tournament continues on Saturday, September 29. Rowan (10-6) plays host York College (PA) at noon. The Profs second opponent will be determined based on the outcome of pool play.
