In December of 2001, Dave Jensen, GCHS Class of '81, became seriously ill due to a
virus that attacked his body and ultimately reached his heart. He was diagnosed with Cardio-Myopathy / Congestive Heart Failure and was referred to Temple University Medical Center. Dave was admitted to the Heart Transplant program at Temple and lived on the cardiac floor for six months waiting for a heart!
In the hospital, Dave suffered several setbacks, including removal of his spleen, gall bladder and parts of his pancreas. These operations, along with multiple infections, have decimated his immune system and left him with a serious diabetic condition. Dave has a defibrillator and pace maker installed in his chest. Heart Transplant is on hold!
Dave developed chronic kidney disease and renal failure...he requires dialysis 3 times per week. Due to his severely compromised condition, he has chronic neuropathy and has lost the use of his legs. Although his attitude is one of perseverance and trying to maintain his spirit, he is in need of several handicap applications to his home to make his life more manageable. He is no longer able to walk without assistance and requires a ramp to be built to enter and exit his Philadelphia home along with several interior adaptations.
We have an estimate of $1500 for the supplies to build a ramp and will use the remaining funds to either help with an electric wheelchair or other medical expenses he needs covered.
