Trio of Seniors and One Junior to Lead Lightning Into Season Opener at Saint Rose on Friday 


WILMINGTON, Del. – A trio of seniors, including defender Carlos Bastardo (Caracas, Venezuela), forward Matt Bik (Sacred Heart H.S./Vineland, N.J.) and goalkeeper Ignacio Farias (Maracay, Venezuela), along with junior midfielder Andre Jank (Campo Grande, Brazil) have been named as team captains for the 2012 Goldey-Beacom College men’s soccer team, it has been announced by first-year Coach Ryan Dixon.

A three-year starter for the Lightning, Bastardo started all 15 games last year. In his three-year career, he has started 42 of 48 games and scored a goal during his freshman season. He also contributed six shots, including four as a freshman.

Meanwhile, Bik appeared in 14 games last year, including 13 starts. He was the Lightning’s second-leading scorer last year with two goals and an assist, scoring against Holy Family on Sept. 20 and against Bloomfield on Oct. 10. A three-year starter for the Lightning, he has started 46 of 49 career games and has tallied seven goals with six assists.

A starter in all 15 games last year for the Lightning, Farias posted a 3.03 goals against average while stopping 70.1 per cent of the shots he faced. He made a season-high 13 saves against Felician on Oct. 15 and tallied nine saves at Shippensburg on Sept. 4 and against Nyack on Oct. 22. A starter in 35 of 43 career games, Farias has recorded a .725 save percentage with a 2.45 goals against average in three years with the Lightning.

After playing in seven games as a freshman, Jank was a starter in 13 of 15 games last year for the Lightning. He was the team’s leading scorer with four goals and an assist, including a goal in back-to-back games against Holy Family on Sept. 20 and Chestnut Hill on Sept. 29. In his two-year career, Jank has scored five goals with an assist.   

The Lightning will open the 2012 season on Friday, Aug. 31 with a non-conference game at the College of Saint Rose at 7 p.m.
