The Daily Good: Farmhopping Brings the Power of Crowdfunding to the Countryside

source http://www.good.is Farming is a creative practice with a final product more spectacular than anything manmade: fresh produce, delicious meat, fragrant flowers, and a well cared for landscape. So in the social media age, when people are willing to donate money in support of a stranger’s creativity through platforms like Kickstarter, it makes sense to try to extend that generosity to the world of agriculture, allowing people to give to small farms whose missions they support. Enter Farmhopping, a website launching next month that intends to create a new framework for financing small-scale farming by connecting farms with backers who pay a small sum to invest in a farm for rewards, like shipments of cheese, and a say in how the farm is managed. In its use of technology in support of foodie-ism, Farmhopping sounds positively Californian, but the surprising part of the project has less to do with its... Read more →

Was Barack Obama Lying Then or Now? | RedState

We all learned yesterday that if you accurately quote Barack Obama’s speeches or fictionalized accounts of his life that he penned, you are automatically taking him out of context. And, as Kevin Eder noted on twitter, you’re racist. Conservatives, such as myself, who dared quote Barack Obama’s Friday entry into grade school Marxism in Virginia are being attacked for taking him out of context. The quote supposedly being taken out of context is Mr. Obama saying, “If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.” We supposedly took it out of context because the preceding sentence in the speech was, “Somebody invested in roads and bridges.” The morons at Media Matters and elsewhere would have us believe that Mr. Obama’s comments about building business had to do with government building infrastructure. Not only is that a nonsensical lie, to believe that one actually would... Read more →

Federal Judge Imposes Racial Quota on FDNY, Responding to Minorities Who Failed Entrance Exams

By Elizabeth Harrington July 16, 2012 (CNSNews.com) – A federal judge is ordering the New York City Fire Department to implement racial quotas to address grievances from minorities who failed entrance exams. On July 5 in Brooklyn, Nicholas G. Garaufis, a Clinton-appointed judge for the Eastern District of New York, issued a ruling that requires two of every five newly hired fireman to be black and one of every five, Hispanic -- until the department has fulfilled the court-ordered quota of 186 black and 107 Hispanic hires. The ruling allows back pay -- totaling an estimated $128.7 million -- for minorities who failed written tests. The court order is a response to a lawsuit alleging that two placement exams (Written Exams 7029 or 2043) for the FDNY were discriminatory against blacks and Hispanics, because fewer minorities passed the exam than whites. (See copies of the exams here.) The Justice Department’s... Read more →

CCAGW Neeeds Your Help!

released date July 18, 2012 Dear Concerned Taxpayer, CCAGW needs your help today to defeat the ill-conceived and outrageously expensive Federal Agriculture Reform and Risk Management Act (FARRM), which despite the “reform” in its title, not only fails to modernize the federal government’s Depression-era, command-and-control agricultural policies, but would also cost taxpayers nearly $1 trillion over the next 10 years! The House of Representatives may vote on this legislation as early as this week, so please, before you do anything else today, tell your U.S. Representative to oppose the FARRM Bill. Our nation is facing its fourth straight year of $1 trillion-plus budget deficits, and the national debt is nearing $16 trillion. At the same time, farm income is at an all-time high of $98 billion, or twice as much as it was in 2001, and commodity prices reached record levels from 2005-2010. Nonetheless, the House Agriculture Committee has crafted... Read more →

Seminole, Fire Department Resolves Flag Flap - Firehouse

SEMINOLE, Fla. -- The flag flap between this city and its firefighters has ended and the American flag will now be properly displayed on fire vehicles. The flags will likely be mounted on the trucks by the end of this week. Seminole City Manager Frank Edmunds said the city's maintenance department is making clamps so the flag can be fixed to the right front fender, as the U.S. Flag Code dictates. "We've never taken the position that we do not want flags," Edmunds said Monday. But "if we're going to (display them), we're going to do it right." A dispute over the flag blew up over the weekend when about 20 protesters, all friends of firefighters, waved flags for about an hour on 113th Street, near one of the city's fire stations. They were protesting an order to remove the flag from Seminole fire trucks. It was a dispute, they... Read more →

Morning Bell: The End of Welfare Reform As We Know It

The Obama Administration made yet another end run around Congress last week—this time, to gut the successful welfare reform law of 1996. If this is allowed to stand, it will mean rewinding years of progress that lifted millions out of poverty. Before the 1996 reform, welfare was a one-way handout: Government mailed checks to recipients who did nothing in return. The new program the reform law established, Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF), changed all that. It required able-bodied welfare recipients to work, prepare for work, or at least look for work as a condition of receiving aid. Welfare reform turned “welfare” into “workfare.” At the time, liberals denounced the new law and predicted dire consequences for America’s needy. They said the reform would do “serious injury to American children” and “substantially increase poverty and destitution.” There was “absolutely no evidence that this radical idea has even the slightest chance... By Chris Concannon Gloucester City News (GCN July 12 issue)Several residents from Roberts Avenue converged on the recent Bellmawr Borough Council meeting to voice their concerns over recent alleged suspicious activity. Reports of squatters, vandalism and possible tent vagrants in the area were given by the very vocal crowd, who also noted incidents of attempted break-ins. Mayor Frank Filipek read a letter from Police Chief Bill Walsh, who was unable to attend the meeting due to a prior commitment. Chief Walsh cited resident concerns over vandalism and robberies, adding police patrols in the area have been enhanced in the wake of the incidents. Some homeowners expressed frustration when, after calling 911, they were “bounced around” from one call desk (at the County Communications Center in Lindenwold) to another. One resident and victim of a break-in stated she did not contact 911, but contacted Chief Walsh personally following her encounter. Amid... Read more →

Governor Corbett Discusses Pro-Jobs Budget, Tours Expanding U. S. Steel Mon Valley Works Clairton Plant

July 16, 2012 Pittsburgh – Governor Tom Corbett discussed his recently passed 2012-2013 pro- jobs budget today during a visit to U. S. Steel Mon Valley Works Clairton Plant, where he cited the Allegheny County employer’s growth as an example of how a balanced state budget that holds the line on spending and taxes creates a solid foundation for job creation. “As governor, it is my priority to bring economic prosperity back to Pennsylvania by growing private sector jobs,” Corbett said. “I remain committed to creating an economic environment where state government and business can work together to ensure job growth across the commonwealth.” For the second year in a row, the governor’s budget does not raise taxes on Pennsylvania businesses and working families. The budget lowers barriers to job creation by lowering job killing taxes on businesses and preserving critical tax credit programs that encourage private-sector job growth. “Manufacturing... (Photo by Steve Ruane) DOYLESTOWN PENNSYLVANIA-American Legion Baseball not only positively impacts the lives of those who play, but also those who watch from the sidelines. Now, the family is making a financial impact – a $10,000 anonymous donation – to the Doylestown Tigers local Legion sponsor, Albert Atkinson Post 210. Weekly Basket: Industrious Defenders

Volume XVI No.27: July 13, 2012 If House Armed Services Committee Chairman Buck McKeon (R-CA) has his way, House members will be distracted by the sideshow in his committee when they debate the fiscal year 2013 defense spending bill on the House floor next week. McKeon has called a panel of defense industry CEOs to testify on Wednesday about the havoc the impending sequestration of spending will create on their balance sheets. The timing is no coincidence: Republicans in both houses have been gnashing teeth and rending garments for the past several weeks about the impact sequestration will have on our national security. But in reality their concern seems to be more about the defense industry’s pocketbooks than our nation’s safety. Last summer, McKeon voted for the Budget Control Act (BCA). This legislation would impose more than $1 trillion in cuts equally divided between the defense and non-defense budgets starting... Read more →

CNBNEWS: ONLY IN AMERICA! (includes video)

CNBNEWS POINT OF VIEW: BY BILL CLEARY Whenever there is an election involving a seat in Congress or in the White House you can bet your bottom dollar it will be a big year for federal grants to be given out. Even though the national debt is $16 trillion and climbing the "Washington Elite" doesn't care, after all it is not their money they are spending. For example in May a list of 25 towns across the United States receiving money to help pay the salaries of firemen or to rehire firemen was released. The funds were awarded through the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) program of the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), a program that provides $400 million in grants nationwide for rehiring laid-off firefighters and retaining those whose jobs are in jeopardy due to budget constraints.” Some of the local communities... ATTENTION GUN OWNERS: Senate Sets Up Vote On DISCLOSE Act For Monday

Monday, the United States Senate will once again take up the latest version of the DISCLOSE Act, in yet another attempt to curtail the First Amendment rights of Americans. The bill, S. 3369, has been fast-tracked on the Senate calendar and is set for a vote on Monday, July 16. NRA-ILA Executive Director Chris W. Cox sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), as well as all members of the Senate, expressing the NRA's steadfast opposition to the legislation. "Due to the importance of the fundamental speech and associational rights of the National Rifle Association's four million members," Cox wrote, "and considering the blatant attack on those rights that S. 3369 represents, we strongly oppose the DISCLOSE Act and will consider votes on this legislation in future candidate evaluations."
