CNBNEWS: JUNE 2012 CHEERS AND JEERS

JEER-To the owner of  the abandon home in the 400 unit block of  S. Broadway, Gloucester City Images-12 and to the City of Gloucester City for not clearing the property of the junk, trash and weeds that surround it. The weeds are as tall as the house in some spots. Talk about a Quality of Life issue.

CHEER-To Gloucester Catholic and Audubon High School baseball teams on winning state titles in June. The state title was the third in a row for Gloucester Catholic, who finished the season with a 27-4 overall record. This is Audubon’s 9th state Group 1 title since the beginning  of the NJSIAA championships in 1971.

JEER-Even though *two-thirds of Americans wanted to see the Supreme Court strike down Obamacare in whole or in part the Court approved the law by a 5-4 vote. Further proof that the “Washington Elite” are out of touch with the people they are suppose to be serving. (*source The New York Times and CBS News)

CHEER-In an awesome display of hitting and power, the Gloucester City High School girls softball team won the South Jersey Group 1 Championship with a 15-4 victory over Haddon Township.  Although they were beaten by the New Egypt HS in the state Group 1 semifinal (1-0) they gave their fans many thrills along the way. Lions Coach Dave Light commenting after the New Egypt game said,"This was a surprising season, I got my 300th win, we won South Jersey, which was huge for us. For a rebuilding year, it was a very successful season. "We'll be back."

CHEER-Audubon resident and Gloucester Catholic Alumnus Stephen Bruno who played shortstop for the University of Virginia this year was selected in the seventh round of Major League baseball draft by the Chicago Cubs. This is the second time Bruno has been drafted. He was a 26th-round draft pick of the New York Yankees coming out of high school in 2009. Bruno chose the Chicago Cubs and received a signing bonus of $150,000. He’ll play for the Boise Hawks, the organization’s Class A short-season affiliate in the Northwest League. An infielder, Bruno doesn’t know if he’ll play second base, shortstop or third.

JEER-Residents on Klemm Avenue are upset over their street being used as a race track. They have asked the police to put in speed bumps, (like the one on Baynes Avenue near Councilman Marchese’s house), place a electronic slow down sign on the street and or use police with radar guns. In return they were told the City could be sued if someone gets hurt going over a speed bump, the electronic signs are broken, and drivers today have instruments that tell them radar is being used. One has to wonder what excuse we will hear if, God forbid, there is a serious accident?

CHEER-The Bell Oaks Lady Owls, of Bellmawr capped off an undefeated season by winning the championship game 15-5 against Barrington's Woodland Warriors. Their victory marked the school's first title in girl's fast pitch softball.

JEER- To those individuals in your neighborhood and mine who don't maintain their property. You know the ones. The grass needs to be cut; the house needs to be painted.  Broken down rain spouts and gutters.  Trash is thrown about in their yards. If they would just show some respect to their neighbors by cleaning up their properties our communities would be much better off.

CHEERS! HOORAY! KUDOS!-At long last the cattle trail, known as the 800 and 900 block of Monmouth Street in Gloucester City is being repaved. No more ruts and bumps, or clanking car fenders. Now if we could only get several other streets repaired such as South Broadway, Jersey Avenue, Cumberland Street, Middlesex, Mercer, Chambers, Sparks and Brown Streets wouldn’t it be grand. Keep those prayers coming folks, it may take several years but they work eventually! ~Signed a Monmouth Street resident

JEER-Gov. Christie suggested in June that his idea of cutting taxes has resulted in 17,600 new jobs being added to the employment rolls in May. However, the Governor failed to mention that even though there were job gains we still have the 5th highest rate of unemployment in the Nation. New Jersey’s unemployment rate rose by a tenth of a percent in May, to 9.2 percent the highest it has been since November. It remains a full percentage point above the national rate of 8.2 percent, and even higher than the Northeast regional rate of 7.9 percent. Nor did he mention that most of the growth took place in the leisure and hospitality sector, which added 9,900 jobs (while higher-paying financial jobs declined by 4,800).

CHEER-Finally after two years our Gloucester City Mayor has removed his illegal unlicensed trailer along with that unsightly cargo trailer from the street. Sometimes they were parked on Monmouth Street and other times they were parked on Railroad Avenue on the sidewalk forcing pedestrians to walk in the street. Most people would have been fined for these blatant violations but for some reason the City Police just looked the other way.  ~Signed a former James Gang Supporter

JEER-To the New Jersey State Department of Transportation for not installing a delayed left hand turn signal at the intersection of Route 130 and Browning Road in Brooklawn. As it is now, that intersection is a traffic nightmare during the evening rush hour.  ~Signed a CNBNEWS FAN
