Man charged in murder of 79- year-old Paulsboro woman

 press release June 29, 2012

Samuel Kevin Davis  (DOB 12/5/66), whose last known address was 299 Swedesboro Ave., Paulsboro NJ, has been charged with murdering 79-year-old Thirza Sweeten, whose body was found by her daughter in the victim’s home at 1562 South Delaware Avenue in Paulsboro on March 19, 2012.

Early in the investigation, Davis became a person of interest in the Sweeten murder.  He was arrested in Paulsboro on an unrelated charge on March 20 and has remained in the Gloucester County Jail since then. Davis was an acquaintance of Sweeten’s son, who periodically lived with his mother but was hospitalized at the time of the murder.

A motive for the murder remains unclear.  There was no evidence of theft in the single-family house.

State Police laboratory tests confirmed this week that biological evidence linked Davis to the murder, which an autopsy concluded resulted from multiple injuries.  He was charged Thursday (6/28) with first degree murder and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. Bail was set at $750,000.

Gloucester County Prosecutor Sean F. Dalton credited quick response by Paulsboro and GCPO investigators that led to a suspect and recovery of key evidence.

The investigation remains open.  Anyone with information about Samuel K. Davis is asked to contact the GCPO major crimes unit at (856) 384-5500.  Anonymous tips can also be sent by text.  Text GLOTIP + message to CRIMES  (274637)
