On May 29, 2012 at approximately 1:53 pm the Gloucester Township Police Department responded to a 233 Lacascata Townhouses in Gloucester Township, NJ for a report of an adult male suspect who had assaulted an adult female friend with a hammer and threatened to stab her with a large knife. The female then was able to escape and call police.
The female stated that the suspect had a history of pschyatric problems and may have been using narcotics. Arriving patrol officers spotted the suspect inside of the house and attempted to talk him into coming out. The officers reported that the suspect was acting abnormally and irrationally. Members of theGloucester Township Police Special Response Team (SWAT) responded and made contact with the suspect.
Crisis Negotiators proceeded to attempt to talk the suspect out, but he refused to come out. Officers then entered the residence and utilized a less-lethal force Pepperball Launching System to control the suspect after he refused to put his hands up when encountered. The suspect was then taken into custody after continuing to struggle with the officers. The suspect continued to act irrationally and was believed to be under the influence of narcotics. The suspect was treated by EMS on the scene and was transported to the hospital for medical evaluation.
The victim suffered minor injuries from the initial assault and no officers were injured during the incident.
Arrested: James N. DiMeo Jr., age 48, d.o.b.: 8/8/1963, 233 Lacascata Townhouses, Gloucester Township, NJ
Charges: Assault, Possession of Deadly Weapon, Terroristic Threats, Obstruction and Resisting Arrest, subject was released on Criminal Summons and committed to medical treatment.
