May 23, 2012 Gloucester High School’s Melissa Mackey stepped to the forefront in Wednesday’s South Jersey Group 1 first-round game.

Mackey was 3-for-4 with three runs and came up with a crucial defensive play at second for the final out in a 9-8 win over Penns Grove. Madison McClintock added two RBIs and a run.

Madison Chain tossed an eight-hitter with five strikeouts for the Lions, who led 7-1 after five innings. Penns Grove rallied with a four-run sixth and a three-run seventh, but it wasn’t quite enough.

The third-seeded Lions (13-7) will host No. 6 Audubon today at 4 p.m. in the quarterfinals.
