CAMDEN COUNTY, N.J. - The Navy women's rowing team took second place overall at the 2012 Patriot League Championships on Sunday in Camden County, N.J. The Mids won the second varsity eight race, placed second in the varsity four race and then took third in the varsity eight competition. In winning the varsity four and varsity eight races, Bucknell claimed the overall championship with 34 points. Navy finished second with 29 points, while MIT had 25 to take third.

Navy's title in the second varsity is the fourth in program history and first since 2008. Navy has now had at least one boat win a Patriot League title in three consecutive seasons.

"I'm certainly really proud of the second varsity, they did a fantastic job," said Navy head coach Mike Hughes. "The varsity didn't have its greatest race today. We were okay, but we needed to be great to win."

Navy started the day on the Cooper River with a second place finish in the varsity four. The Mids clocked a time of 8:05.8, while Bucknell took first with a 7:54.7. MIT placed third with a time of 8:28.3.

"That was a good showing for the varsity four, especially since that boat came up short to MIT a few weeks ago at the GW Invitational," said Hughes.

The second varsity eight race followed and through the first 1,000 meters, Navy found itself trailing Bucknell by a half of a boat length. But the Mids got a strong push in the second half of the race and wound up winning by open water. Navy posted a winning time of 7:04.5. Bucknell clocked a time of 7:08.8.

Bucknell sealed the overall title by winning the final competition of the morning - the first varsity eight race. The Bison crossed the finish line in 6:48.5, while MIT took second with a time of 6:50.9. The Mids finished in third place with a 6:59.3.

Navy will be off next weekend and will return to the water on May 13 at the EAWRC Sprints in Cherry Hill, N.J.
