WHAT'S HAPPENING IN OCEAN CITY

Forty years ago, when I first became Public Relation Director of Ocean City, a young boy, maybe 9 years old, would wander into our office looking for errands to run. We knew only that his name was Joey.
It was obvious that Joey wasn't well cared for. So Agnes Cox, who worked with me at the time, and I would pay him to go on errands, bought him a winter coat, a new pair of shoes and tried to help as much as we could.
Joey had street smarts. He earned extra money carrying packages for ladies at the supermarket and by pestering local merchants for small jobs. We later learned that he was quite adept at dodging the truant officer. He had hideouts under the boardwalk.
Eventually Joey stopped visiting our office. We supposed he had moved out of town. Fast forward until about a year ago. The telephone rang and a voice at the other end said "Hello, this is Joey Eulo. Remember me?"
It seems that Joey after a traumatic childhood had grown up to become a computer whiz in Vegas, a job he left to return to New Jersey to earn a college degree. Now a Phi Beta Kappa, his latest project is producing a film for college, based on his early life.
The film "Chasing Shadows," is centered on a day in the life of Anthony Heavens, a small, fatherless tyke who skips school to wander the streets and boardwalk of Ocean City in search of himself, his father and his own place In the world.
After discovering his father's whereabouts, Anthony sets out to find him. Along the way he must confront the neighborhood bully, overcome his fears and yes, evade a determined truant officer.
Production will take place on Sat., April 21 in Ocean City. The film maker is still seeking a few actors, production assistants and grips. This is a volunteer project but you're guaranteed to have fun working with Joey and will gain valuable experience. Call 609-525-9300 for information.

(Fri.-Sun, April 6-8) Breakfast with the Easter Bunny: 8 a.m. till 2 p.m., April 6; 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., April 7, and 8 a.m. till noon April 8 at the Chatterbox, 9th and Central Ave. Order from the menu. Take free photos with the Easter Bunny. Call (609) 399-0113 for reservations.
(Sat., April 7) Easter in the Downtown: Breakfast with the Easter Bunny (see above), free photos with the Bunny in a lifeguard stand, Candy filled eggs for children. Open an egg at the time of a sale for Eggstra Special Savings along the downtown, 6th to 11th Streets on Asbury Ave. For information, call (609)398-4662.
(Sat. April 7) The Woofin' Paws Pet Fashion Show, 11 a.m., Carey Stadium, 6th St. off Boardwalk. Event is open to any pet that will not eat another pet. Pets compete in various categories including Best Dressed, Best Bonnet, Intelligent Pet Tricks, etc. A $5 entry fee benefits the Ocean City Humane Society, a no kill shelter. Spectator admission is free, but visitors may make a donation to benefit the Society if they so choose. Best of Show wins the Dean Schofield Woofin' Paws Plaque for Perfection. (Sat., April 7) The Great Easter Egg Hunt: This event is held at 2:30 p.m. from 11th to 14th Sts. on the Beach. There are 5 age groups: 0-2 at 11th St; 3-4 years at 11th St., 5 years at 12th St., 6 years at 12th St., and 7 years at 13th St. Over 100,000 eggs will be given away filled with candy and toys.
(Sun., April 8) The Easter Sun Rise Service: A traditional, non denominational service by the sea, held at the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace, at 6:30 am. Music will be provided by the Nancy Fox School. David Burke of Ocean Grove will be guest speaker. The public is invited.
(Sun., April 8) The Easter Fashion Promenade: Starts 1 p.m. at the Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace. Prizes are awarded for Best Dressed Family, Children, Male, Female, Teen Male, Teen Female, Bonnet and Most Unusual Bonnet. Contestants should congregate in the vicinity of the Music Pier no later than 1 p.m. The Easter Bunny arrives and hands out chocolate Bunnies to children and poses for photos starting 1 p.m. Call (609)525-9300 for information.
(April 13-14) is our big Doo Dah Weekend with the 27th Annual Parade set for Sat., April 14th at noon. But there's more to the weekend than just the Parade.
Events begin on Fri., April 13 at 1 p.m. with the nonchalant Basset Hound Olympics at the Tabernacle Grounds, 6th and Asbury Ave. Some of the 600 bassets that will be in the Parade the next day flex their ears and display limited athletic prowess.
The hilarious events include sort of a dash, hurdles which are normally avoided at all costs and a semi exciting dash through a plastic tunnel. The dogs then wander off to snooze. This is really a fun event and well worth the admission which is zero.
On Fri. April 13 at 2p.m., renowned humorist, Margie Ingram, will speak on "Humor Resilience: Tickling Stress Before It Tackles You." Margie is Co-Director of the Humor Project, of Saratoga Springs, New York, and one of the national pioneers in stress management and humor resilience. The talk will be held at the Ocean City Free Public Library, 17th and Simpson Ave.
It is a laughter filled, engaging, content rich program that will provide powerful, productive and profound principles to add more humor to your life and work. Margie will offer workable wit and wisdom on such topics as how to handle life's challenges and stresses with grace, hope and a sense of humor. Admission is free.
On Friday, April 13 at 8 p.m., the annual Doo Dah Comedy Show is set for the Music Pier, 8 p.m. It will star Chuck McCann, a talented actor, comedian, children's show host, winner of five Cleos for commercials he's been featured in, guest star on dozens of sitcoms, voice over specialist for Disney and talented ventriloquist. Chuck is still performing today. He will appear in a special tribute to Soupy Sales with impersonators of legendary comedians, Trudy Sales, Soupy's widow and former June Taylor dancer, and Paul Dver, musical director of the Soupy Sales Show. Admission is $5 with proceeds going to the Ocean City Food Cupboard and/or a donation of dry or canned food for the cupboard.
The 27th annual Doo Dah Parade is set for Sat., April 14 at noon. The route is from 6th and Asbury to 12th and Asbury, at 12th Street turns to Boardwalk and ends at the Reviewing stand by the Music Pier at Moorlyn Terrace. Parade includes off- the -wall brigades, bands, floats, costumed characters, impersonators of legendary comedians and lots of other nutty stuff.
Following the Parade the PieAsco is held in front of the Music Pier. Folks sit in grandstands and smoosh each other with shaving cream pies, the kind Soupy used on his TV show. Entry is free and all participants receive a certificate certifying that they were smooshed. Call 609-525-9300 or email[email protected] for information.
The Ocean City Environmental Commission in Partnership with the Ocean City Free Public Library Presents a series on Bees. The movie "Vanishing of the Bees", narrated by actress Ellen Page, will be shown on Friday, March 23 at 7pm. And on Wednesday, March 28 at 7pm, Joe Alvarez, noted speaker, educator and member of the Jersey Cape Beekeepers Association will teach "everything you wanted to know about bees but never knew who to ask." Come and learn about these incredibly amazing insects and why we need to protect them. Both events will be held in the Library lecture room N110. FREE Admission.
