When asked about reaching the 20-win plateau with his Schalick High School boys basketball team this season, Eric Cassidy quickly cut off the question.
“21”.
The Cougars reached 21 wins this year behind the fourth-year, 26-year-old head coach, earning Cassidy Today’s Sunbeam Coach of the Year honors.
“I tell people that as a Group I school, I don’t think we get the recognition sometimes,” Cassidy said. “But we played in some tournaments this year and got some big wins. The kids believed they could win and that was half the battle.”
Schalick perused the holiday tournament circuit this season, earning wins over Deptford, Burlington Township and Triton — a team that had wins over Shawnee, Camden Catholic, Cherokee and Clearview this season.
“They knew every night that if they came out and played their best, they could win,” Cassidy said. “If they came out and played their best, they would be successful. The tournaments we played in helped us.”
