Bellmawr Postal Site Will Remain Open

March 2, 2012

Bellmawr, NJ - Today, Congressman Andrews announced that 900 South Jersey jobs will be saved at the United States Postal Service’s (USPS) South Jersey Processing and Distribution Center in Bellmawr.  This site had been considered for closure while the USPS conducted a five month study to determine its effectiveness and discussed the possibility of its consolidation. Congressman Andrews has staunchly supported keeping the Bellmawr site running due to the extraordinary value and efficiency it delivers to South Jersey residents.

‪The Bellmawr distribution center is open 7 days a week, 24 hours a day and serves 1.9 million people in South Jersey. It is ideally located at the juncture of Interstates 295 and 76, and Route 42, and is just minutes from Exit 3 of the New Jersey Turnpike. The site's convenient location allows large quantities of mail to be processed more quickly, thereby maximizing efficiency and reducing costs.  The USPS study found that there was “no significant opportunity to improve efficiency or service through consolidation.”

‪“Keeping the site open is not only great news for those employed at the facility, but it is also ensures that South Jersey residents will maintain access to a high quality mail delivery system.  Equally as important, it is the right decision from a budget standpoint" said Congressman Andrews. "While cutting costs in government needs to be an absolute priority, we cannot shut down services that are this valuable to the community -- especially when the alternative is to send our mail to a place that is more expensive and less efficient."

The U.S. Postal Service’s South Jersey Processing and Distribution Center in Bellmawr is one of the largest in the state.  In 2011, the plant handled 1.15 billion pieces of mail.  As a member of the Education and the Workforce Committee, Congressman Andrews believes that fast and reliable mail services like those provided by the men and women at the Bellmawr Processing and Distribution Center are an important part of South Jersey’s growing community and economy.
