press release Feb. 26

PHILADELPHIA - With a 7-7 Atlantic 10 record, the La Salle women's basketball squad garnered the No. 8 seed in this week's 2012 Buick Atlantic 10 Championship. The Explorers will face No. 9 Xavier on Friday at 11:30 a.m. at Saint Joseph's Hagan Arena, the first of four first round games.

The Explorers finished in a seventh place tie with Duquesne in the league standings, with the Dukes owning the tiebreaker for the No. 7 seed. They completed their best Atlantic 10 season since the 2006-07 squad also went 7-7.

St. Bonaventure, which finished 14-0 in league play, grabbed the No. 1 seed. Temple is seeded second, followed by Dayton and Richmond. The top four seeds earn byes in the 12-team tournament. Rounding out the field are St. Joe's, Charlotte, Duquesne, La Salle, Xavier, George Washington, Saint Louis and Fordham.

The Explorers earned a 63-51 win over the Musketeers earlier this season behind 28 points from Brittany Wilson. The win was part of La Salle's six-game win streak, the program's best streak since 2006. That win was also the third straight Atlantic 10 win of the season for the Explorers, who started the conference season 3-0 for the first time since 1996-97.

Xavier, the defending Atlantic 10 champions, rounded out the regular season with a 70-61 win over Massachusetts to snap a two-game skid, which came at the hands of St. Bonaventure and Dayton.

With a win on Friday, the Explorers would advance to the quarterfinal round to face the top-seeded Bonnies at noon on Saturday. The winner of that advances to the semifinal on Sunday at noon. The title game is slated for 5 p.m. on Monday, March 5.

Sunday's semifinal contests will begin at Noon on March 4, and televised nationally on CBS Sports Network, while the title game of the 2012 A-10 Championship on Monday, March 5, will be shown live on ESPN2 and ESPN3 at 5:00 pm.
