Deer and Bear Hunting Allowed at Rockport WMA
The NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife informs hunters that the refuge status for the Rockport WMA will be lifted to allow deer and bear hunting beginning December 5, 2011. As always, the Game Farm proper (area around the pens and buildings) remains closed to all hunting. The pheasant refuge status for the 380 acre area posted as restricted remains and is closed to pheasant hunting. It is hoped that additional pheasants can be recovered in the coming months as breeding stock for next year's production.
A map of the portion of the WMA that remains closed to pheasant hunting can be viewed athttp://www.njfishandwildlife.com/news/2011/rockport-refuge-map.pdf . The area includes the parcels on either side of Rockport Road contiguous with the Game Farm buildings and pens upslope to and including the power line right of way.
Update on Rockport Pheasant Farm
The NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife has completed a final inventory of pheasants remaining at its Rockport Pheasant Farm after three weeks of statewide stocking. The inventory showed that the number of pheasants that had escaped from pens damaged by the October 29 snowstorm was higher than originally estimated.
Due to the larger than estimated losses, the Division regretfully informs pheasant stamp buyers that December 17 will be the final pheasant stocking date on Wildlife Management Areas this year. Stamp buyers can be assured the Division did everything that possibly could have been done to lessen the impact of the storm on this year's pheasant stocking program.
