CAGW Grounds $3 Billion in Defense Budget Pork Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW) won its multi-year battle to terminate federal funding for the alternate engine for the Joint Strike Fighter, a wasteful pork-barrel project that was opposed by both the Bush and Obama administrations and the Pentagon, which had repeatedly said the alternate engine was “not necessary and not affordable.” On April 25, the Department of Defense terminated its contract for production of the engine after CAGW ultimately embarrassed Congress into declining to fund the program. Then taxpayers received an early Christmas present when GE and Rolls-Royce announced on December...

It should not be dishonored by including bigots: Catholics will be outraged to learn that of the 50 nominees for the class of 2012, Thomas Nast made the cut. Nast is not only the most bigoted cartoonist in American history, the 19th-century artist consistently inflamed hatred against the Irish and Catholics alike. Amazingly, the NJHF's website omits any mention of Nast's anti-Catholic legacy. No one is denying his many talents as a...

For good reason, Macy’s chooses December to...

Every year, our diocesan employees hold an Advent day of recollection, during which we reflect together, via prayer, discussion and liturgy, about how best to prepare for the coming of the Lord at Christmas. This year’s theme was immigration and the Church’s special role in the care and welcoming of migrants of all kinds. Some might wonder if that theme, connected to this season, is a bit of a stretch. But upon further reflection the two are tightly linked. At Christmas, we celebrate God, through Jesus, taking on human nature. And the Scriptures tell us this occurred at a particular...

Some observers think that President Obama’s awful record should make it easy for any of the GOP candidates to beat him. That’s a dangerous delusion. No incumbent should ever be underestimated, especially one the media loves. Also, each of the Republican candidates has proven highly adept at techniques for losing the 2012 election. Some have shown a tendency toward academic discussions that leave voters feeling as if they’ve dropped in on a college dorm-room bull session… or worse, as if the candidates might use them as subjects in a sociology lab experiment. But today the real culprit in this debacle is the U.S. Senate which, right now, is home for the holidays already, celebrating with family while Washington sits in a stalemate. In a rare appearance...
