National Park Suspect Arrested on Armed Robbery

John Monk Jr. (DOB 4/13/75), of 311 New Jersey Ave., National Park  NJ was charged 11/16 with the armed robbery of the National Park Mini Market  at 5th St. and Columbia Blvd. in National Park.

In the 9 p.m. robbery on 11/8, a male estimated to be in his 30s, wearing a red hooded sweatshirt, entered the market and demanded money, indicating he was armed with a handgun.  He took about $300 from the store manager and fled.


Monk had become a suspect in the robbery as a result of an investigation by the Westville NJ Police Department.  At about 10 p.m. on 11/16, Westville Ptl. Michael Shannon saw Monk in the 700 block of Hessian Avenue, National Park, knowing he was a suspect in the Mini Market robbery and also had an active Camden County warrant, and arrested him at gunpoint.


Monk was taken to Westville police headquarters, where he was able to slip out of handcuffs and run from the building.  Officers apprehended him just outside the station.  Monk was charged with armed robbery, escape, resisting arrest and aggravated assault against a law enforcement officer, specifically by kicking and attempting to bite officers.  Ptl. Shannon was treated for a sprained wrist at Underwood-Memorial Hospital in Woodbury NJ.  Monk also sustained injuries, was treated at Underwood-Memorial, then lodged in the Gloucester County Jail in default of $45,000 cash bail.
