On October 1, 2011 the Gloucester Township Police responded for report of a shoplifting in the K-Mart store located at 1468 Blackwood Clementon Road. The shoplifting was captured on store video surveillance depicting the male suspect as he placed a woman's dress under his shirt and attempted to exit the store without paying for the merchandise. The merchandise was discarded by the suspect when approached by K-Mart security as he fled prior to police arrival.
A video was made of the surveillance footage by the Gloucester Township Police's Technical Services Unit and was posted on the department's Facebook and YouTube site asking for the public's assistance in helping identify the suspect. On November 2, 2011, this video received attention as it was covered by numerous media outlets, who dubbed the suspect as the “Dancing Shoplifter,” which resulted in the Gloucester Township Police receiving several telephone tips identifying Anthony DiVietro as the shoplifter. In a 12 hour period since the video was reposted on the police department’s Facebook page and with the help from the media, it was viewed approximately 3700 times.
With the numerous citizen tips, this investigation successfully continued that resulted in Anthony DiVietro being arrested and charged with shoplifting and a future court date in Gloucester Township Municipal Court. Anthony DiVietro also had an outstanding warrant and was released on his own recognizance. Gloucester Township Chief of Police Harry Earle stated, "The implementation of social media in our police operations has expanded our reach and accessibility to the community resulting in successfully closing four cases since February of 2011. We are thankful for the media assistance and concerned citizens, who partnered with the police by taking the time to provide their tips to help solve this crime."
ARREST: Anthony DiVietro, Age 26, from the 500 Block of the White Horse Pike in the Borough of Stratford, NJ.
