Norcross to Schools Development Authority... Get to Work!

(CAMDEN) – Senator Donald Norcross (D-Camden/Gloucester), chair of the School Facilities and Construction Subcommittee within the New Jersey Legislature’s Joint Committee on the Public Schools, released the following statement in response to the committee hearing held today at Newark City Hall.

The meeting was called to discuss the process for repairing the damage to the state’s schools as a result of Hurricane Irene and the August earthquake:

“It’s unfortunate that natural disasters like a hurricane and an earthquake are needed to draw further attention to school districts that are in dire need of renovations or construction of new facilities. If today’s meeting did anything, I hope it showed the Schools Development Authority that their inaction is having a direct impact on the quality of education that our students are receiving.

“New Jersey’s schoolchildren who are attending the state’s crumbling public schools – like the Broadway School in Camden’s Lanning Square section or the Mary Ethel Costello Elementary School in Gloucester City – should be afforded the same educational opportunity that students in Cherry Hill or Haddonfield receive, and that begins with a comfortable and safe learning facility.

“I urge the Schools Development Authority to get to work making improvements on these schools and constructing new ones where they are needed. The SDA should know that summer vacation is now over.”
