GLOUCESTER CITY-- Depending on one’s rooting interest in the Pennsville Memorial and Gloucester high school foo tball game Friday night, special teams was either the hero or the downfall. Despite being dominated in time of possession and holding the ball for only 8:55, the Eagles used big plays, including a kick and punt returns for touchdowns to upend the Lions, 27-22, in West Jersey League Diamond Division action. Going into halftime, the Pennsville defense allowed the Lions’ Ben Boyer to eat up the clock while amassing 216 yards on 31 carries and three touchdowns — something had to be done. Whether it was the adjustments or physicality, the Eagles’ defense came out strong in the second half and forced a Spartan punt after five plays. After the Eagles ensuing drive stalled at the goal line with Gloucester’s C.J. Tursi intercepting the ball on fourth and goal, the defense again stood its ground and forced another punt.
