Bellmawr Council Honors Softball Teams

  Bellmawr Mayor and Borough Council honored two championship teams from the 2011 Gloucester City Girls’ Softball Tournament during its September 22 meeting.

  This tournament marked the final time it will be held in Gloucester City, prompting Mayor Frank Filipek to offer if Bellmawr can help in any way to keep ensuing tournaments close by.

  Members of Council joined the Mayor in congratulating the following players and their coaches.

15U (15 and under)

  Players: Madeline Bekier, Taylor Casey, Devfan Constantine, Randi Fisher, Kelsey Funk, Samantha Funk, Mariah Greagor, Breanna Jackson, Danielle Kitchenman, Patricia Leitner, Christina Olsen, Emily Vitacolonna and Kaitlyn Wright.

  Coaching Staff: Head Coach David Funk, Angela Funk, Donna Hall, Ed Kitchenman and Bill Nowak.

18U (18 and under)

  Players: Mariya Aslam, Jess Brennan, Taylor Burmylo, Colleen Finnegan, Taylor Fisher, Samantha Funk, Mariah Greagor, Rachael Leming, Kaylee Mitchell, Christina Morelli, Rebecca Pumphrey, Ellen Unger and Krista Wells.

  Coaching Staff: Head Coach Joe Helmbold, Kelly Burmylo, Scott Burmylo and Chris Morelli.

  Under communications, thank you letters were read, from:

  E.M. Burke Principal Frank Jankowski, for the work on the school parking lot; and residents of 34 and 50 Warren Avenue, along with 1117 Logan and 18 Union Avenues, for help with flooding in their basements during “Hurricane” Irene.

  Filipek noted that the Borough pumped water out of more than 100 homes.

  Under committee reports, the Mayor joined John Bollinger and members of Council, in thanking the Emergency Management Department for their work during the storm.

  Dave Duncan said the Borough is currently taking bids, for new carpeting in Borough Hall.

  Lou DiAngelo said the Borough will be holding its first Oktoberfest event on Saturday, October 22, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., which will include food and other vendors, and will be held at the Rec Centre on Creek Road. The rain date will be October 23.

  All business on the evening’s agenda was unanimously approved, with the following of note:

  A special permit for a social affair was granted to the Bellmawr Purple Eagles, as they will be holding their 50th Anniversary Celebration on Saturday, October 15, at the Bellmawr Park Fire Hall on Essex Avenue, from 7 p.m. to midnight.
