(TRENTON) – A 3-year-old horse from Gloucester County was euthanized on October 20 after contracting Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), a serious, mosquito-borne illness in horses. “With an increase in the state’s mosquito population due to rain storms in the last couple of months, horse owners must be vigilant in protecting their animals from diseases spread by mosquitoes,” said New Jersey Secretary of Agriculture Douglas H. A South Jersey soldier died in Afghanistan this week, the Department of Defense said Friday. Sgt. John A. Lyons, 26, of Seaside Park, Ocean County, died Wednesday in Ghazni province from wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with small arms fire. Lyons joined the military in February 2009 as a combat engineer. He had been assigned to the Eighth Engineer Battalion, 36th Engineer Brigade, in Fort Hood, Texas, since June 2009. A Glendale, Ariz. police officer was shot Friday night and died from his injuries early Saturday, reports the Tucson Citizen. Officer Brad Jones, 27, was accompanying a probation officer to a meeting with a convict, when the probationer pulled out a gun, struck Jones and fled, the paper reports. On 10/21 at 1359 officers responded to two residences on Lane Ave for a theft of jewelry. Both victims stated that Christopher Golding (20) of Lane Ave had stolen jewelry from their homes and sold it at a local pawn shop. Officers were able to locate the stolen jewelry with receipts showing Christopher Golding as the seller. Officers located the suspect at his residence and took him into custody. On 10/24/2011 at approxiamtely 1135 PM, Patrolman Paul Bertini #224 conducted a motor vehicle stop on Blackwood-Clementon Road for a traffic violation. During the course of the motor vehicle stop an emergency 9-1-1 call was received by Gloucester Township Police communication of a subject reported to be armed with a shot gun at the nearby WAWA store located on Little Gloucester Road. Photo: Robbery Suspect Eugene Calhoun October 25, 2011 On October 20, 2011, Eugene Calhoun was arrested on the 5500 block of Pine Street for the shotgun robbery that occurred at the Good Times Bar located at 5527 Lansdowne Avenue. After further investigation, Eugene Calhoun was identified as the alleged suspect for three additional robberies and is being charged accordingly. Calhoun was arrested without further incident. Eugene Calhoun is 48 years-of-age and is from the 600 block of North Conestoga Street. Calhoun will be charged with multiple counts of robbery and related offenses. Read more →

At a press conference yesterday the Camden County Republican Party called for the resignation of Democrat Freeholder Director Lou Cappelli Jr. The Director, who is running for re-election, was charged in 2008 by Sea Isle police for allegedly slamming a door on his wife's arm "causing visible injury". The Republicans said Cappelli was also accused by his wife of forgery, fraud and embezzlement of money from her. Because the Republicans only received a one page arrest document from the Sea Isle police they filed an OPRA lawsuit against the department for allegedly withholding significant case papers.
