GLASSBORO, NJ - The Rowan University football team will be participating in Coach to Cure MD during its home game against SUNY Cortland on Saturday, September 24 at 1 p.m.

The Profs’ coaching staff and thousands of American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) coaches nationwide are wearing Coach to Cure MD shoulder patches on the sidelines to help raise awareness about Duchenne muscular dystrophy.  Rowan and the AFCA are asking fans to donate to research projects supported by Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy (PPMD).

Started in 2008, Coach to Cure MD is a partnership between the AFCA and PPMD, the largest national charity devoted exclusively to Duchenne muscular dystrophy.  Over the past three years, the effort has raised about $875,000.  In 2008, over 200 schools and 2,675 coaches participated in Coach to Cure MD.  Last year, those numbers increased to 373 schools and over 9,400 coaches.

Donations for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy research can be made athttp://CoachtoCureMD.org or by texting the word CURE to 90999 (a $5 donation will automatically be added to your next phone bill).

Duchenne muscular dystrophy is the most common fatal genetic disorder diagnosed during early childhood and primarily affects boys across all races and cultures.  It is a progressive muscle disorder that causes loss of muscle function and independence.  Duchenne affects approximately one out of every 3,500 boys and 20,000 babies each year worldwide.  The goals of Coach to Cure MD are to increase national awareness of Duchenne muscular dystrophy and to raise money to fund research for a cure.
