CORTLAND FOOTBALL EDGES ROWAN, 31-28 -cnbnews.net

GLASSBORO, NJ – Quarterback Dan Pitcher threw for 315 yards and two touchdowns to lead SUNY Cortland to a 31-28 victory over Rowan University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday.

The Red Dragons improve to 2-1 overall and 2-1 in the conference.  Rowan has a 1-2 record with a 1-1 NJAC mark.  Pitcher (gr. Cortland, NY/Cortland) completed 20 of 29 passes.  Wide receiver John Babin (so. Warwick Valley, NY/Warwick Valley) made eight catches for 183 yards.  Wideout Kordel McInnis (fr. Washington Twp., NJ/Washington Twp.) added 51 yards on five grabs.  Wide receiver Mike Humphrey (jr. LeRoy, NY/LeRoy) hauled in three balls for 44 yards and a touchdown.  Tight end Brian Haber (sr. Northport, NY/Northport) had one reception for an 18 yard touchdown.  Tailback Dorian Myles (sr. Lackawanna, NY/Hamburg) carried the ball 26 times for 46 yards and a touchdown.

 

 

Linebacker Cody Allen (sr. Medina, NY/Medina) registered 12 tackles (six solo, six assisted) and two pass breakups.  Defensive back Steven Lenhart (jr. Ticonderoga, NY/Ticonderoga) followed with 10 stops (four solo, six assisted).  Defensive back Andrew Tolosi (fr. Monroe, NY/Monroe-Woodbury) compiled eight tackles (four solo, four assisted).  Defensive linemen Steve Gruber (sr. Thornwood, NY/Westlake) and Connor Tompkins (sr. Ossining, NY/Sleepy Hollow) both had seven tackles, 2.5 tackles for a loss and one sack.  Tompkins also forced a fumble.

 

For Rowan, quarterback Louie Bianchini (so. West Long Branch, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) had 25 completions in 37 attempts for 213 yards and two touchdowns.  Wide receiver Eddie Eisenhart (fr. Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Reg.) made nine catches for 87 yards and one touchdown.  Wideout Dan Reed (so. Westmont, NJ/Haddon Twp.) chipped in with five grabs for 50 yards.  Wide receiver Anthony Barone (sr. Hammonton, NJ/Hammonton) posted 41 yards and a touchdown with four receptions.  Running back Steve Hevalow (sr. Galloway, NJ/Absegami) rushed for 37 yards and a touchdown on 12 attempts.

 

Linebacker Dean Hammel (sr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) collected 12 tackles (three solo, nine assisted).  Linebacker Geno Raman (sr. Mullica Hill, NJ/N. Kingston (RI)) tallied 11 stops (four solo, seven assisted).  Safety Eric Sharkey (sr. Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Reg.) had six tackles (three solo, three assisted) and one pass breakup.  Defensive end John Dokouslis (fr. Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan) recovered a fumble for a touchdown.

 

The Red Dragons trailed 21-13 at the half.  On the first drive of the third quarter, Pitcher threw an 18 yard touchdown pass to Haber to give Cortland a 22-21 lead with 10:46 on the clock.  Humphrey hauled in the two-point conversion attempt from Pitcher and the score was 24-21.  Earlier in the drive Humphey had a 15 yard reception and Babin added a 29 yard grab.

 

Cortland pulled ahead by 10 (31-21) after a 14 yard touchdown catch by Humphrey at 11:58 in the fourth period.  The Red Dragons started on the Profs’ 47 yard line.  After a one yard run by Myles, Babin made a 19 yard reception.  Tailback Bronson Greene (fr. Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) followed with a 13 yard rush.  With 49 seconds remaining, Bianchini connected on a two yard touchdown pass to Eisenhart. Bianchini had seven successful pass attempts in the drive for 39 yards.  Rowan attempted an on-side kick, but it was recovered by Cortland.

 

SUNY Cortland took a 3-0 lead at 9:48 in the first quarter following a 29 yard field goal by kicker Marc Corrado (sr. Newburgh, NY/Newburgh Free Academy).  Pitcher led the Red Dragons down the field with two completions (five attempts) for 66 yards.  On the ensuing possession, Hevalow found the end zone on an eight yard run to put Rowan ahead, 7-3 at 5:49.  The drive was 10 plays for 65 yards.  Hevalow totaled 22 yards on six rushes.  Twenty-six seconds later, Dokouslis recovered a fumble and took it eight yards for the touchdown.  Myles’ six yard touchdown carry with 1:50 left made the score, 14-10.  He recorded 21 yards on four touches.

 

Barone had a 15 yard touchdown catch at 9:05 in the second quarter to extend the advantage to 11 points (21-10).  In the drive, Bianchini had five completions (five attempts) for 57 yards.  Corrado’s 19 yard field goal at 2:10 cut the deficit to eight (21-13).  Pitcher threw for 35 yards and rushed for seven.  Corrado connected on a 31 yard field as time expired to bring Cortland within five (21-16) at halftime.  The Red Dragons started on their own 40 yard line.  Pitcher went three for three for 46 yards to put Cortland in field goal range.

 

Rowan hosts Western Connecticut State University in a NJAC game on Saturday, October 1 at 1 p.m.
