I know what you’re thinking: she’s run out of ideas and is going to try to convince me that I don’t know how to pet a dog.
First of all, most dogs aren’t thrilled with a sudden smack on the noggin. Come to think of it, most people don’t enjoy it, either. So, let’s begin by getting down to eye level with the dog, providing it’s either your dog or you’ve asked the owner if the dog is friendly and if you may pet her. Move slowly and speak softly as you extend your hand, palm up. If the dog’s tail wags, move your hand closer so that she can nuzzle your palm. Then, while she is nuzzling, scratch her under the chin. That’s all there is to it!
If the dog accepts your touch and seems relaxed you can gradually work your way down her chest and then up again, scratching her behind the ears and on her jowls. Again, slow, gentle movements will calm her down and may even give you a life-long friend!
