At this time of year, you’re probably getting the kids or grandkids ready for the start of the new school year. New clothes, backpacks, and school supplies are top priorities along with doctors’ appointments, sports registrations, and everything else involved in a new beginning.

But, what about Fido?

A dog lives in the here-and-now, and forgets that the bus takes his best friend away every day. He’s forgotten that there will be long stretches of time during which he’ll be left all alone with no companion, so it’s up to you to make that transition easier!

Here are a few ‘quick fixes’ to make Fido less likely to get into trouble or be lonely those first few weeks of school:

  • While shopping for clothes and supplies remember to pick up a few new toys for your dog!
  • Make sure to space out the toys so your dog can enjoy them one or two at a time
  • Purchase one of the many ‘interactive’ toys on the market (such as a Kong) that will keep your dog busy for hours
  • If your dog is crated see if a neighbor can come in after 4 hours to take him out for a walk

Remember, anything left on the floor is fair game to Fido; put all ‘humans-only’ items out of his reach!

If you have any questions please feel free to drop me an email at As always, Cleary’s Notebook encourages dialog; your input is welcome!
